Kloetinge ( Klusdurp in Zeeland ) is a ring villagein the municipality of Goes in the Dutch province of Zeeland .

Origin of name

In 1216 the name is handed down as "Clotinge", later "Cloetinge". In the Zeeland dialect as: "Kloetehe" or "Klusdurp". The name Kloetinge is said to come from the term Scholle (Dutch "Kluit" = "Scholle"), which were piled up to protect the village from the sea. Village names in connection with -inge are among the oldest in the province

badges and flags

The coat of arms of Kloeting shows three blue French lilies ( Fleur-de-Lys ) on an orange shield . It is similar in the design / division of the coat of arms of France from 1376 to 1792 and 1814 to 1830 as well as the coat of arms of the Hessian state capital Wiesbaden . In the Netherlands , the color orange is the symbol of the royal family of Orange .

history

Kloetinge is one of the oldest villages in southern Beveland . The village was probably founded around the 10th century. The village is said to have had a strategically important position in the Middle Ages. During the Eighty Years War (also: Spanish-Dutch War), Spanish soldiers were barracked in Kloeting (and Goes). In 1572 Kloetinge was burned twice during the war (Dutch: "platgebrand"). In 1578 the territory became the property of the Prince of Orange dynasty .

Between 1216 and 1248 Kattendijke was created as an independent parish as a parish of Kloetinge.

In the 15th century there were five mills in Kloetinge, all of which were owned by the Lords of Borssele ( Borsele ).

The previously existing chapel was replaced by the imposing Geerteskerk in 1250. The main choir dates from the 13th century and is a fine example of Flemish brick Gothic from that period. The nave dates from the 15th century and was originally single-nave. The tower construction was completed in 1494. Several fortified courtyards and castle-like buildings in the area are evidence of the importance of the place in the Middle Ages (see Ravenstein rule ).

In the 16th and 17th centuries the most important livelihoods of the population were agriculture, salt production and leather processing.

After 1900 there was rapid population growth. The reason was the favorable taxation. Many wealthy people from Goes settled in Kloeting.

Kloetinge formed an independent municipality until 1970 and has been part of the Goes municipality ever since .

Kloetinge is a typical market town in Zeeland with a long historical tradition. In the middle of the village there is a village pond ( Zeeland vaete , Dutch dorpsvijver ), which was used as a trough for the cattle and as a reservoir for the fire brigade. The appearance of Kloetinge is partially protected in terms of cultural protection, there are more than 60 state-protected objects in the village ( Rijksmonumenten ).

The Geerteskerk ( Gertrudenkirche ) dates partly from the 13th century.

Kloetinge has a historic mill, the Kloetingse Molen ("Oostmolen" since 2013), which dates back to 1704.

The house where the Dutch meteorologist and natural scientist Christoph Buys Ballot was born is easy to find thanks to the memorial plaque attached there.

A little outside of the village is an old, listed country estate (Jachthuys).

The largest sequoia tree in Zeeland is said to be in Kloetinge .

In a former military bunker from 1955 that was shut down in 1996, a data center was operated between 1998 and 2002 by CyberBunker and then by other operators.
