Vaete ( Dutch dorpsvijver ) is the Zeeland name for village pond . Such a village pond was usually located in the center of a village in Zeeland and therefore had a decisive influence on the village image and the function of the rural / village community. It was often used collectively as a trough for cattle and as a reservoir for the fire department .

The Vaete can still be found in some villages in the Dutch province of Zeeland and is referred to as such, although it is no longer used as such. The word vaete also appears in many street names in Zeeland .

In Baarland , a village in the municipality of Borsele in Zeeland, such a vaete is registered as an object with special state protection (so-called Rijksmonumenten ).

People in Zeeland and Flanders also have the Zeeland word vaete in their surname . So z. B. the well-known Flemish composer Jacobus Vaet .

In chemistry, it also refers to the first element in the chemical periodic table, hydrogen .
