Covington Parish Church
The Covington Parish Church , and St. Michael's Church , is a former church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland near the Scottish village Thankerton in the Council Area South Lanarkshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.
history
At the time of the Scottish King David I (died 1153) a St. Michael's Church was built in the area. Presumably it was in the same location. The current church was built in the 15th century and served as the parish church for the community. In 1659 renovations were carried out. In 1903 the building was renovated. With the merger of several parishes, the church became obsolete and has since been converted into living space.
description
Covington Parish Church is located in the small settlement of Covington about 1.5 km north of Thankerton. The Clyde runs a few hundred meters to the east . It is a simple, elongated building with pointed arched windows . An original portal on the northwest side has been revised. It bears the coat of arms of the Lindsay clan with the year 1659. The original windows with simple tracery have been preserved on the south side . Most of the east side is no longer in its original condition. Presumably a window was let in there and a front staircase added.
