An uncomfortable truth

Still An Inconvenient Truth - Our Time Is Running is a 2017 American documentary film that, as a sequel to An Inconvenient Truth (2006), explores former US Vice President Al Gore's ongoing mission : fighting climate change .

With the announcement by the incumbent President of the United States that he was withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement , the finished film had to be adjusted a little later.

action

In the sequel to "An Inconvenient Truth", in which Donald Trump plays one of the leading roles, Al Gore looks more optimistically into the future - despite Trump's announced exit from the Paris climate agreement. His hope is based, among other things, on the successes in expanding renewable energies .

For two years, the filmmakers accompanied Al Gore as he roamed the country to make people aware of the dangers of climate change and to encourage them to act. The effects of climate change are described in an emotional way in “almost eerily beautiful pictures”. Still an uncomfortable truth is also shown by how Al Gore exchanges with climate experts and tries to influence politicians worldwide.

An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth To Power is a call to action: "It's not too late - be uncomfortable!"

publication

The film was released in the United States by Paramount Pictures on July 28, 2017 . In Germany, the film was first shown publicly on September 7, 2017.

criticism

The film industry's magazine The Hollywood Reporter praised the film in advance.

Some portrayals in the film are criticized. According to the Indian side, Al Gore did not play the role he played in the film in the talks during the UN climate conference in Paris in 2015 . A commentator for the Süddeutsche Zeitung sees Al Gore and his achievements being too much the focus of the film.

The Neue Zürcher Zeitung names three basic problems: The film suffers “from the narcissism of its author”; Because of the constant focus on Gore as the main character, the suspicion arises “that in reality a completely different goal is in the foreground, namely to document the underestimated greatness of this near-president for all time.” Second, take the film with the facts not too specific, for example with regard to Gore's role in the context of the Paris climate conference. Third, Gore is caught up in the old debates about the existence or non-existence of climate change, but has nothing to say about the most efficient means of mitigating climate change; "He closes his piece of propaganda with a simple appeal to do what is morally right."

Honors

On December 7, 2017, it was announced that the film from which the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will determine the nominations for the 2018 Academy Awards in the category of Best Documentary is in the preselection . The award went to the film Icarus that year .

In the case of Gore's current climate protection plea, this step was inevitable: The slightly optimistic tone of the documentation, which mainly focuses on the small advances and the one gigantic step of the Paris climate agreement, had to give way to gloomy reality. Donald Trump's announcement to withdraw from the contract not only undermined many efforts by Gore and his colleagues, but also the dramaturgy of the film. "
