Sepedon sphegea is a fly from the horned fly family(Sciomyzidae).

features

The flies reach a length of 8-11 mm. They are predominantly brown or black in color. The femora and tibia are orange-red, the tarsi black. The posterior femora have a number of protruding bristles. The elongated antennae are hairy downy. The protruding eyes have a band-shaped pattern.

distribution

Sepedon sphegea is common in the Palearctic . The species occurs in large parts of Europe. It is also found in the British Isles.

Way of life

The flight time lasts from April to early November. The flies usually stay near water. They are often found on grasses and low-growing bushes. The aquatic larvae predatory feed on water snails.
