The Taras Brotherhood or Tarasovzen Brotherhood ( Ukrainian Братство Тарасівці ) was a secret organization named after the Ukrainian national poet Taras Shevchenko in the Ukrainian areas of the Russian Empire from 1891 to 1898. They campaigned for a greater spread of the Ukrainian language and culture as well as one political independence of Ukraine.

history

In the summer of 1891, students at the University of Kharkov at the grave of Taras Shevchenko near Kaniw decided to found an organization that wanted to promote the spread of the Ukrainian language and culture. Among the founders were: Ivan Lypa , Borys Hrintschenko , Mykola Michnowskyj and Vitaly Borowyk ( Віталій Гаврилович Боровик ). The political goal was the independence of the Ukrainian territories in the Russian Empire and Galicia . Members became students, pupils, farmers and workers. The center of activity was initially Kharkov. Ivan Lypa formulated the organization's goals in an article in the April 1893 magazine Pravda under an anonymous name. In the summer of 1893, many key members were arrested.

The new center became Kiev , and other groups were formed in Odessa , Poltava , Lubny , Pryluky and other places. In 1898 the organization dissolved.

In 1897, the Stara Hromada organization , which had a similar focus, had formed the General Ukrainian Impartial Democratic Organization , which primarily pursued political goals.

aims

The organization sought to spread the Ukrainian language more widely in families, schools and society. The Ukrainian culture and tradition should be promoted, as well as the ideas of Taras Shevchenko.

Ukraine should be formed as an independent state, with federal structures, a parliament (Sejm), a hetman as president, freedom of religion, separation of state and church and the equality of all classes. In the Russian Empire, the various peoples should be given political autonomy and social justice should prevail.
