The Taras Shevchenko tomb ( Ukrainian Могила Тараса Шевченка ) is the tomb of the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko and part of the national Shevchenko memorial near Kaniv in the central Ukrainian Cherkasy Oblast . It has the status of a "national sanctuary" in Ukraine

The tomb is located on Mount Taras , also known as Klosterberg , on the bank of the Dnieper . In addition to the grave with the memorial, there is also a museum about the poet. A staircase with 360 steps leads to the tomb, at the beginning of which stands the fountain Eternal Spring of Taras Shevchenko's art .

After Taras Shevchenko died on March 10, 1861, he was buried in Saint Petersburg . On May 8, 1861, the remains were transferred to the Ukraine, as he had wished for in his poem Sapowit , and they were buried on May 22 on the monastery mountain .

The one on Granite - pedestal standing Bronze - Statue was, as is the museum behind it in 1939 built. The architect of the monument was Yevgeny Lewinson and the sculptor was Matwei Maniser (1891–1966), who also designed the Lenin monument in Eisleben .
