Dosabhai Framji Karaka

Dosabhai Framji Karaka ( May 8, 1829 - March 17, 1902 ) was an Indian newspaper editor, civil servant and author, who is known for his history of the Parsees .

Live and act

Dosabhai Framji Karaka was trained at the Elphinstone Institution . After serving as the editor of Jami-Jamshid magazine in Gujarat for five years , he became head of the Bombay Times . During the Indian Uprising of 1857 he was appointed Censor of the Native Press , as which he controlled the newspaper system of the natives. In 1858 a work appeared in which he analyzed the effects of British rule on India and the uprising of the previous year.

From 1858 to 1859 he stayed in England for some time , where he wrote the book The Parsees: their history, manners, customs, and religion ( The Parsees: their history, manners, customs and religion ), which for the second half of the 19th century was the authoritative work on the Parsees. After returning to India, he held a variety of judicial and administrative posts in the Bombay Presidency . He was chairman of the Bombay Municipal Corporation , which is responsible for the administration of the city of Bombay, and was sheriff of Bombay . He also became a Fellow of Bombay University . In 1887 he retired.

The lawyer and librarian Dosabhai Framji Karaka (1911–1974) was his grandson.
