Xena and Gabrielle are looking for Gabrielle's friend Seraphin. They find this when she is about to be sacrificed at a ceremony for the return of a goddess, whereupon the two friends step in and save Seraphin from death. At first they assume that the participants in the ceremony are followers of Callisto , who escaped from Tartarus , where Hercules once chased them. It turns out that the "returning goddess" is "hope", the daughter of Gabrielle and the god Dahak, as well as the murderess of Xena's son, and that the followers of the ceremony are worshipers of Dahak. Dahak, the lord of darkness, strives to rule over humanity, which calls his adversary Ares to the scene and moves to arm himself for the decisive battle for world domination. Callisto, who is immortal as well as bored and plagued by existence, has hope at her side, as this in return for her help promises her ultimate death and thus also the forgetting of all torments. When Xena, in search of hope, arrives at the cave where she suspects the murderer of her child, she gets into a fight with Callisto, who is buried by triggering a rockfall and can thus be eliminated for the time being. Deeper in the cave, Xena then finds the huge cocoon that envelops hope that has not yet been reborn. But just as she is about to smash him, Ares, who has since entered into an alliance with Dahak, appears and teleports himself and the cocoon away into the halls of war. Xena, Gabrielle and Seraphin follow Ares to where Ares abducts Gabrielle to the goddesses of fate and lets them know that if Xena kills Hope, she will die herself. In addition, the god of war demands an old guilt from Gabrielle - Xena should be stopped from her plan to kill Hope. Back in the halls of war there is another battle. Seraphin, who is ready to make sacrifices, is the chosen priestess of blood, is wounded in the process, wets the cocoon with her blood and thus initiates the rebirth of hope. When Xena strikes a devastating blow in order to destroy the cocoon after all, she is stopped at the last moment by Gabrielle. The rebirth of hope, which looks very similar to Gabrielle, can thus be completed.
68 | 22nd | The Biggest Sacrifice, Part 2 | Sacrifice (Part 2) | May 11, 1998 | Apr 25, 1999 | Rick Jacobson | Paul Robert Coyle |
Dark times have come. All over the country the followers of the Dahak round up innocent people who are to be sacrificed at a great ceremony, which is supposed to enable the arrival of Dahak in the world. Ares has allied with Dahak and united with his reborn daughter "Hope" to found a new dynasty of gods. The two newly in love are also looking for the hind blood dagger, the only weapon that can kill gods, with which the other Olympic gods are to be wiped out. Meanwhile, Callisto is betrayed by hope that she does not keep her promise to kill her. Frustrated, she seeks out Xena, who through Hercules knows where the god-slaying hind dagger is, and offers her support in return for euthanasia. The decisive battle ensues. Xena and Gabrielle storm the temple on top of a volcanic crater where the great blood sacrifice ceremony is taking place. The followers of Dahak can be overwhelmed, whereupon Xena proceeds to fight the mighty hope. Joxer, who was also present, who was tasked with bringing the blood dagger to the temple, throws the slayer of the gods to her, which Ares tries to prevent. Callisto intervenes and holds Ares in check, which gives the dying Xena the opportunity to destroy hope with the blood dagger. With the death of Xena prophesied by the goddesses of fate in mind, Gabrielle throws herself between the two opponents and as a result plunges down with hope into the volcanic crater. Xena's life is saved. Dahak's arrival was prevented. Callisto, deeply amused by what happened, announces that she has found new courage to face life, but is stabbed to death with the blood dagger in anger by the pain-torn Xena. |

69 | 1 | In the realm of the dead of the Amazons, part 1 | Adventures in the Sin Trade (Part 1) | 28 Sep 1998 | Oct 24, 1999 | TJ Scott | Acting: RJ Stewart; Synopsis: Robert G. Tapert & RJ Stewart |
Xena goes to Siberia , where she wants to look for her friend Gabrielle in the realm of the dead of the Amazons . Memories of old days are awakened when Xena visited the people together with the warlord Borias and the shaman Alti. At that time, Xena and Alti also waged war against a tribe of the Amazons, from whom Alti had once been cast out for fear of their strength. Through an old ritual, Xena temporarily arrives in the realm of the dead, where she finds the Amazon tribe languishing in front of the gate to the afterlife. She learns that Alti had put a curse on the tribe in revenge for her exile, and that this prevents the Amazons from entering the redeeming hereafter. Xena decides to help the warriors and returns to earth. Together with the remaining living Amazons, she goes into battle against Alti. The shaman throws her troops at them, but they can be defeated in a great battle.
70 | 2 | In the realm of the dead of the Amazons, part 2 | Adventures in the Sin Trade (Part 2) | Oct 5, 1998 | Oct 31, 1999 | TJ Scott | Acting: RJ Stewart; Synopsis: Robert G. Tapert & RJ Stewart |
After winning the worldly battle, Xena and the Amazons prepare for the spiritual battle against Alti. They want to leave their bodies through the dance of the spirits in order to be able to destroy Alti with their souls in a spiritual battle. However, the shaman does not remain idle and summons some demon spirits who thwart the plan of the warriors by occupying the bodies of the Amazons before they are ready for the final battle. Xena can drive away the ghosts, whereupon the women move on against Alti. Finally they reach the “camp of the dead Amazons” covered with skeletons, the center of power in Alti, where Xena reveals to her companions what once happened there. At that time, Xena had gained the trust of the Amazons, but in alliance with Alti she lured the Amazon queen Cyane and her leading warriors into an ambush in this place and killed them all. Through Cyane's blood, Alti received supernatural powers and, at that time without Xena's knowledge, also the power to prevent the Amazons from entering the afterlife. When Xena finishes her story, Alti announces himself. With a martial art grip, the warrior princess temporarily transports all her companions as well as herself into a state of death and asks for the unification of their souls within themselves. Afterwards she is strengthened, on a spiritual level, to fight against Alti. Alti succumbs and loses her life, as a result of which the starving Amazons in the realm of the dead are freed from their curse and can step into the hereafter. Xena then goes on looking for Gabrielle.
71 | 3 | Munster family | A family affair | Oct 12, 1998 | Nov 7, 1999 | Doug Lefler | Acting: Chris Manheim; Synopsis: Liz Friedman & Chris Manheim |
When Xena arrives in Poteidaia , where she plans to visit Gabrielle's family, she meets her supposed friend, who was believed to be dead, who tells her that she did not fall all the way down into the volcano, but found support on a ledge. For some time now, an animal-eating and man-eating monster that hunts at night has been up to mischief in the tranquil town. Xena finds out that the monster Dahak's grandson is "the destroyer" and concludes from this that the alleged Gabrielle is the monster's mother "hope", who looks like Gabrielle confusingly. Unexpectedly, Xena meets the real Gabrielle with whom she forges a plan. While the warrior princess seeks out the monster in his cave to fight it, Gabrielle hope is also to lure there. When Xena threatens to be defeated in their fight, Gabrielle appears and gives the monster hope in front of its mother. She distracts the loving monster and takes it in her arms, whereupon Xena can stab it from behind. Staggering around in agony, the monster encounters the real hope that Gabrielle had pursued and stabs it to death, believing that it was betrayed by its own mother. The two reunited friends are visibly taken with them by the events but are ready for new adventures.

As an old man, Joxer buys a scroll in a tavern that comes from Gabrielle, the legendary bard of Poteidaia , and on which she had written down the deeds of her and Xena in days gone by. At home he reads the story to his children: Xena, who worries about the welfare of her newborn child Eve, visits the Parzen to find out about Eve's fate. This announces to her that Eve will trigger the Götterdämmerung but that Xena will have to die for it first. Only through the “essence of death” could the twilight of the gods be initiated and Eve saved from the wrath of the Olympic gods . Pursued by Hades and Athene , Xena and Gabrielle manage to escape together with Eve and they find shelter with their friend, the general Octavius . On Mount Olympus , during a council of the gods, Ares proposes to send the death goddess Celeste to Xena and her child, who refuses, however, because she only comes to those mortals whose time has come. Meanwhile, Xena seeks out Hephaestus and engages him in a fight in which she threatens to be defeated. When the goddess of death appears, Xena throws the captured chains of Hephaestus around her, imprisoning her. Hephaestus himself can be pushed into an abyss and thus rendered harmless for the time being. In the evening, Xena and the weeping Celeste talk about the painful craft of the death goddess and Xena declares that she will end this. Later, Hades and Athene capture Gabrielle and exchange her for Celeste when they meet Xena. Immediately after the exchange, the two gods, together with Hephaestus and some warriors, pursue Xena, who escapes on a cart, and her companion to the sea, where the cart, hit by divine weapons, falls down the cliff into the abyss. Standing on the edge of the cliff, the three gods contemplate their work. You see Gabrielle lying lifeless on the ground, the burning car in which Eve should be and Xena, who seems to be overcome by the pain of the death of her neighbor, and who, in her eyes, commits suicide with a bottle of poison. When the gods sure of victory have withdrawn, Octavius approaches the scene. It turns out that Eve had never been on the wagon, but with Octavius and that Xena and Gabrielle had not drank poison, but the tears of the goddess of death, the "essence of death", which Xena had won during her conversation with Celeste , and only through whom the death of the companions could be played to the gods. Unexpectedly, before the effect of the "essence of death" wears off, the god of war Ares, who is in love with Xena, appears and brings her and Gabrielle into an ice cave, where he freezes them both, believing they are dead, and seals the cave.

25 years after Ares frozen them, Xena and Gabrielle awaken from their icy sleep. After a short detour to see Joxer and his family, the two travel to Rome with Joxer and his son Virgil to look for their friend Octavius and Eve. Once there, they learn that Octavius is now Augustus , the emperor of the Roman Empire . Xena can also find her daughter Eve, who is now known as Livia and, with the help of Ares, has made a name for herself as a cruel pursuer of the followers of Eli and as the emperor's commander. Livia is supposed to marry the emperor, but has an affair with Ares, who in turn makes advances to his resurfaced old flame Xena. Out of jealousy, Livia wishes a duel with Xena in the arena , which also involves the lives of some imprisoned Elian supporters and those of Gabrielle, Joxer and Virgil who were arrested for refusing to donate money for the construction of a temple of Ares . Xena eventually wins, leaving Livia dead.

Xena, Gabrielle, Joxer and Virgil go in search of Livia or Eve to protect them from themselves. This rages, incited by Ares , together with some Roman troops who have remained loyal to it, murdering and plundering, pursuing the followers of Eli, through the empire. One night, when Xena is on her way to Ostia to warn the people there, Gabrielle secretly goes to the enemy camp. There she tries to bring Livia to her senses so that Xena would not be forced to kill her own daughter in the end. However, the plan goes wrong and Gabrielle is imprisoned. During the subsequent rescue operation, Joxer is pierced with a sword by Livia and dies. There is a final battle in the Temple of Eli in Ostia, where Livia and her army are surprised by Xena, Gabrielle, Virgil and some Roman troops sent by the Emperor Augustus to support them. In the midst of the fray, after Xena realizes she can't kill Livia, she asks Eli to rescue her daughter. A divine ray of light appears over Xena and Livia, through which Livia sees images from the past. Suddenly she realizes how much her mother loves her, that she had always tried to protect her and that Ares manipulated her in a cruel way. Virgil, who wants to get revenge on Livia for the death of his father, has to be stopped by Xena. Eve, who has come to her senses, then runs out of the temple into the unknown, horrified by the deeds she has committed.

Eve, plagued by her deeds, is wrong, observed from afar by Xena and Gabrielle, battered through the desert. When the desert warriors thirsting for vengeance want their throats, Xena and Gabrielle intervene, save Eve, and bring her to the supporters of Eli. There she is forgiven through a cleansing baptism ritual , giving Xena the power to kill gods while Eve is alive. In the meantime, the Olympian gods Eve continue to pursue life, as this, according to the Parzen prophecy , will bring about the twilight of the gods . Athena sends the furies to Gabrielle , who haunt her spiritually and, in time, turn her against Eve. However, some of the other gods do not want to wait, but rather act immediately. Immediately after the baptismal ritual, the giant sea god Poseidon rises from the water, while Discordia , Deimos , Hephaistos , Hades and Artemis strike from land. There is a fight. Initially, the gods throw fireballs that Xena can fend off and smash back with her sword. Just as Poseidon is about to raise his huge trident to throw, Xena deflects a ball of fire thrown by Hades and fatally hits Poseidon in the chest, which then dissolves. In a rage, Discordia rushes into the fight, but can be beheaded in no time by Xena, whereupon Hephaestus hurls his hammer, which Xena fends off with her thrown chakram , so that he falls to the ground. Before the god of fire can swing his chains, Xena is at his hammer, picks it up and smashes his chest with one throw. The Olympus trembles. The other gods recoil. Athena and Ares appear and Athena scolded the losers for not being able to wait. Xena, Gabrielle and Eve then move on and later seek refuge in Joxer's former home. In the evening, Xena is lured out of the hut by Ares so that the Furies can complete their work undisturbed. So Gabrielle is mentally confused by the goddesses of vengeance, takes her Sai and stabs this Eve in the back. Xena can intervene in time and prevent worse, but leaves Gabrielle with a severe head wound. The gods choose this point in time for the final battle and attack again. Fireballs are thrown again, causing the hut to catch fire. Hades can be set on fire by Xena with the help of spit alcohol and perishes. Xena is shot by Artemis with an arrow. Deimos is killed by a falling roof beam. Athene and Artemis retreat to Olympus in view of the losses and Ares, who was about to kill Eve but could still be prevented by Xena, must ultimately follow them. Aphrodite , who also appeared during the fight , out of concern for her old friend Gabrielle, brings her as well as Xena and Eve to the mountain of the gods, where the injured are to be healed. Once there, Xena can catch two arrows shot at her by Artemis, throw them back, and fatally strike the goddess of the hunt. The bitterly fighting Athena is also stabbed to death by Xena at the end. The war god Ares, who is in love with the warrior princess, eventually heals Eve and Gabrielle, but loses his immortality. And so the old gods died. |

The archangel Lucifer wants to increase his fame and decides to throw Xena into hell so that she can take her place there as the new princess of hell. As a result, the still open gate of hell would close again and the evil would not continue pouring into the earth to poison people's hearts. Xena devises a ruse to escape the hell throne. She wants to seduce Lucifer with the allure of earthly life and make it clear to him how much he loves his dark side. She wants to evoke all seven deadly sins in him, so that he then goes to hell and takes control there instead of her. At an immoderate picnic , she brings out his arrogance during a conversation about him and the other archangels . Later, in the bedroom, she gives him an Egyptian massage that makes him lazy . Meanwhile more and more people are lured to Amphipolis by the evil streaming out of the gate of hell, where it can get stuck in the heart. There are excesses of violence and mass orgies. At the height of driving, when Lucifer and Xena just voluptuous surrender to each other, the Archangel appear Michael and Raphael . They teleport themselves and Xena directly to the abyss of the Hellgate and fight with her intending to throw her into it. Lucifer also appears, but changes sides after an initial fight with Xena and stands by her, eager to rule the world with her. The other two archangels withdraw. Xena later makes it clear to Lucifer that Eve, the only one who cannot harm evil, must be killed so that they can be together in peace. Eve is then hunted down and finally caught. She loses the fight with Lucifer, but shortly before he wants to give her the fatal blow, Xena stops him and explains that there is only one person who really deserves to kill the messenger of Eli - namely her best friend Gabrielle. Envious of Gabrielle, Lucifer becomes angry , whereupon, after committing all seven deadly sins, which is not allowed to happen to an archangel in contrast to humans, he is turned into the devil and, with a little step assistance from Xena, is forced into his new office in the underworld to compete.

Gabrielle goes north to look for her companion, who, after a strange encounter with a stranger named Beowulf, went with him to settle an old debt. In a village, Gabrielle meets Brunnhilda, who tells her an old story that happened 35 years ago. Once a great and merciless warrior came from the distant land of Chin to the northern lands. There she met Odin , the king of the gods of the north, who had knocked himself on a tree from weariness of war. Through her zest for life and fighting spirit, Odin was able to overcome his despair, found her way back to life, and made Xena the Valkyrie out of thanks . Soon afterwards the warlike Xena got into a conflict with the highest Valkyrie Grinhilda, who had fought for peace. When Odin took Xena's side, Grinhilda left Valhalla . The warrior princess finally pretended to love Odin in order to find out from him where the Rhine gold is. Odin fell for her ruse and told her the way to the hoard, believing that Xena would never look for it, because the Rheingold is very dangerous for loving hearts and only those who have renounced love can permanently gain the power of the hoard can make use of. So Xena went to the Rhine maidens and told one of them that she wanted to join them. She believed her and led her to the Nibelungen nursery. Xena stole the Rhine gold and forged a mighty ring out of it, which should make her invincible as long as she wore it on her finger. In the present, in a remote hut lined with corpses, Beowulf tells Xena about a cruel, man-murdering creature called Grindl . At night there is a fight with the creature who is now wearing the ring made of Rheingold. When Gabrielle and Brunnhilda arrive there the next morning, they find the dejected Beowulf and learn from him that the monster has kidnapped Xena.

Gabrielle, Brunnhilda and Beowulf are looking for Xena. They find it alone and then go to the Grindl's cave together , where Xena tells her companions what happened many years ago. Back when she forged the ring from Rheingold , it was stolen from her by the Valkyrie Grinhilda. Grinhilda put the ring on her finger, knowing that it would soon deny those who do not renounce love and take away what means most to them. She hoped to be able to destroy the bloodthirsty Xena with the power of the ring, but in the following fight she did not succeed in defeating Xena and so the good-hearted beauty turned into the ugly monster Grindl. Xena cut off this finger and took possession of the ring. She locked the monster in a cave and sealed the entrance with chains she had stolen from Odin and a magical raven medallion to make Grinhilda suffer from her ugliness forever. The monster was able to pull the magic ring from her finger, but it didn't do anything at first because it still had love in its heart. 35 years later, Grinhilda had learned to renounce love and she now used the power of the ring to break out of her prison. So the companions lie in wait for Grindl in his cave. After a long battle, they can finally destroy the monster, whereupon Xena takes the ring back. However, they later find out that the defeated monster was not Grinhilda herself, but her son, whom she was already carrying when she turned into Grindl. Odin, who claims the ring for himself, is planning to kidnap Gabrielle in order to trade her for the ring. The Valkyrie Brunnhilda, who was entrusted with getting the ring for Odin from the beginning, has fallen in love with Gabrielle and gets in his way by kidnapping Gabrielle in the east moor and thus bringing her to safety for the time being. When Xena refuses to give him the ring at a subsequent meeting with Odin, Odin allies with the monster Grindl. Together with the Valkyries, the allies Xena and Beowulf attack with the intention of stealing their ring and their lives. Beowulf is badly wounded. The cornered Xena is forced to use the ring in dire need, so she can repel the attackers. As a result, however, she loses all memories of Gabrielle and herself, the woman Gabrielle helped her to become. Wandering aimlessly, she later meets Brunnhilda, who gives her the ring. Brunnhilda brings the ring to Gabrielle. Since Odin and Grindl announced out of anger at Xena that they would kill all their friends, Brunnhilda transforms herself into a magical eternal ring of fire with the help of her Valkyrie powers, which surrounds Gabrielle, who is laid to rest on a stone altar in the moor, so that she is protected from the vengeance of the angry is.

A year has passed since Xena lost her memories and Gabrielle was laid to rest in the eternal flame ring by Brunnhilda together with the magic ring made of Rheingold . Since then, many Viking warriors have succumbed to the searing flames or have been sent to Valhalla by the nearby monster Grindl . Beowulf returns to Denmark , where he wants to ask his old friend King Hrothgar for help in freeing Gabrielle. He finds the people celebrating. Her king's marriage to his future wife Wealthea is imminent, who on closer inspection turns out to be Xena. When Beowulf visits Xena in her apartment to remind her of her past, the two are suspected of a love affair and are to be thrown into dungeon. They free themselves from the clutches of the guards and flee back to the north by ship. There they look for the flame ring created by Brunnhilda, which can only be broken by Gabrielle's soul mate Xena. It comes to an argument with some Valkyries , in the course of which Grindl also intervenes in the fight. Xena finally crosses the ring of fire and awakens Gabrielle with a kiss, whereupon the dark power that the ring has over Xena is broken by love and Xena regains her memories. The warrior princess immediately grabs the ring and asks the angry raging monster Grindl, into which the Valkyrie Grinhilda had once turned, for forgiveness for her deeds. With the power of the magic ring and Grinhilda's forgiveness, the former Valkyrie can be transformed back and will later be given back her place as supreme Valkyrie on Odin's side . The treacherous ring is destroyed by the events and takes on its original form as Rheingold. Xena brings this back to the Rhine maidens, from whom she stole it, and thus also settles this old debt.

Xena once hid a scroll in a cave in the Ionian Sea that divers found in the early 21st century . At a press conference, the enthusiastic scientists and journalists are informed that the story regarding Xena must be rewritten based on the findings of the scroll. In a lecture, those interested are informed that when Gabrielle and her daughter "Hope" fell into a volcanic crater, Xena was looking for her companion in the realm of the dead of the Amazons (episode 4x02), and that the scroll reports what happened after these events and before Gabrielle was found. At that time, Ares went to see Xena and proposed to her to no avail. Xena later found out that the god of war had saved Gabrielle and hope from hitting the bottom of the volcanic crater, but that Gabrielle had to sacrifice her soul for it. In order to redeem Gabrielle's soul and to be able to live with her in peace, Xena agreed to sacrifice her own soul to Ares. She agreed to marry the god of war in the next life before the Parzen , whereby the marriage would be eternal and indissoluble. Xena hid the stolen contract, which can only be destroyed by Ares himself, within the scroll in the Ionian Sea, where Ares never found it and thus could not claim the agreement. At the press event, after the lecture has ended, Ares suddenly rushes through the door into the conference room on a motorcycle and demands that the contract that has now been found be fulfilled. Also in attendance are Annie Day (Lucy Lawless), who was Joxer in a previous life, Mattie (Renée O'Connor), formerly Gabrielle, and Harry (Ted Raimi), who was previously Xena. Ares puts Xena's and Joxer's souls back into their correct bodies, whereby Xena finds the strength to compete with the god of war. In the following fight, Ares hurls several fireballs at the warrior princess, who can burn the contract with one of these fireballs and is thus redeemed.

Xena and Gabrielle travel to Japan , where they want to assist the spirit of the beautiful Akemi against Yodoshi, the lord of darkness. The tyrannical Yodoshi keeps Akemi's soul imprisoned there in a tea house and forces her to lure human souls so that he can enslave and devour them. Akemi is an old friend of Xena's, who learned the martial art technique "blockade" a long time ago from the warrior princess, with which she later killed her cruel father. To restore her honor, Xena was then supposed to behead Akemi and bring her ashes to Akemi's family shrine . When Xena and Gabrielle arrive in Akemi's hometown of Higuchi, they find it besieged by the forces of the sinister. You can drive away the attackers, but come across hostile residents. They learn from them that when Xena wanted to bring Akemi's ashes to the shrine and the people attacked her because of the shameful remains of the parricide, the warrior princess started a fire through her self-defense, which spread and killed 40,000 people. The people also blame Xena for the consequences of Akemi's act, because the spirit of the slain father was so angry about the murder that he was not accepted even in the underworld and thus became Prince Yodoshi, who also incorporated the souls of the burned . Xena decides to destroy Yodoshi, which she can only succeed in ghost form.

A terrible battle rages between Xena and the armies of the Lord of Darkness. Yodoshi's troops suffer great losses, but can seriously wound Xena and ultimately behead her. In ghost form, Xena meets Akemi's soul, trapped in the tea house, who, like the warrior princess, is at the mercy of the tyrannical Yodoshi. Xena's ghost later secretly seeks out Gabrielle and the local allies who lead her to the tea house. Gabrielle takes on the task of searching for Xena's dead body, whose ashes she should bring to the Fujisan volcano by the next sunset , where it must be immersed in the "source of power", whose magical water has healing and healing properties gives unearthly powers and can bring the warrior princess back to life. Meanwhile, Xena and the rest of the allies prepare to assassinate Yodoshi in the tea house. The assassination attempt fails, but Yodoshi is badly wounded, whereupon he drives into a hawk and also goes to the "source of strength". Enabled by their ghostly existence, Xena and Akemi follow suit, occupy two birds and follow the dark one to the volcano. Once at the source, there is a fight for the coveted water. After alternating successes, Yodoshi gains the upper hand, heals himself and soaks up Akemi's spirit. After a kiss from Gabrielle, the injured Xena finally tastes the strength-giving water. As a result, a battle breaks out between the Lord of Darkness and the warrior princess like between gods, at the end of which Yodoshi can be pierced with a sacred katana and beheaded. The suffering souls are immediately released from Yodoshi's bondage. However, the 40,000 burned souls from Higuchi must be avenged in order for them to be redeemed from their damnation forever. So Xena prevents Gabrielle from dipping her ashes into the spring. |
