Garth Maxwell

Garth Maxwell (* 1963 ) is a New Zealand director who is mainly involved in fantasy .

Life

Maxwell had his first media success when he won the New Zealand Film and TV Awards in the category: Best Short Film in 1987 with his directorial debut Tandem . He directed the 1993 horror film Jack Be Nimble , with Alexis Arquette in the lead role. In 1999 he took part in the Toronto International Film Festival with Beyond Gravity . In 1995 he began working as a director for Sam Raimi . He directed and wrote a screenplay four times for Hercules .

He directed ten times for the Hercules spin-off Xena . Maxwell commented on XENA and sexual orientation in an interview:

"I'm a gay person who's out, and one of the real benefits of XENA is that it acknowledges that people have a range of sexualities; the shadings of Xena and Gabrielle's relationship are made clear right at the outset."

(German translation: "I live openly gay myself; one of the real merits of XENA is to make people understand that their sexuality is diverse. The shades in the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle are clearly worked out from the beginning." )

He was a director for the Raimi series Cleopatra 2525 . In 2007 he co-produced the twelve-part New Zealand TV series Rude Awakenings . Since 2008 he has already directed seven Legend of the Seeker episodes, Sam Raimi's current project.
