Max Edmund Palmer (born November 2, 1927 in Clarksdale , Mississippi , † May 7, 1984 in St. Louis , Missouri ) was an American actor and wrestler , who was best known for his body length of 2.31 meters.

Max Palmer was born in a small town in Mississippi and had three normal height siblings.

Initially, Palmer played basketball in high school , which he left after 11th grade . At the age of 18 he started developing a drinking problem . He worked as a bartender and bouncer.

Due to his size, he was given the opportunity to appear in various films and series, including Invasion vom Mars and Killer Ape (together with Johnny Weissmüller ). He has also been invited to some shows such as the Dean Martin / Jerry Lewis Comedy Hour , or The Jimmy Durante Show .

After his brief acting career from 1952 to 1954, he began a period as a professional wrestler in Salt Lake City, Utah. He performed under the wrestling name Paul Bunyan , which was based on the legendary giant lumberjack figure. He has been touted by the ring announcer as being up to eight feet tall and weighing 500 pounds. However, his true height was around 2.31 m and his weight was also lower. Due to health problems resulting from his alcohol consumption, his wrestling career ended in 1960 at the age of only 33.

In 1963 Palmer, meanwhile a dry alcoholic, became a Protestant clergyman and preached as "Goliath for Christ" until his death . He died of heart failure in 1984.

Palmer was married from 1975 until his death. His wife Betty was the mother of former major league baseball player Jim Palmer , who was adopted by Max Palmer.
