Primera División (Argentina) 1968

The 1968 Primera División was 38 . Playing time of the Argentine football league Primera División . This was divided into two semi-annual championships, each of which produced an Argentinian champion. In the first half of the year the Torneo Metropolitano took place, the second half of the year was played in the Torneo Nacional. This mode was retained until 1985, when the way of playing in Europe was adapted and no longer played in the calendar year, but from summer to summer.

Torneo Metropolitano

The Torneo Metropolitano was the first half-year championship. It began on March 1 and ended on August 4, 1968. First, two groups were formed, the two top-ranked teams met in two semi-finals. The two finalists were determined from these semifinals. These were CA San Lorenzo de Almagro and Estudiantes de La Plata in 1968 . San Lorenzo was ultimately able to prevail in the final and became Argentine champions for the fourth time in the club's history.

Torneo Nacional

The Torneo Nacional was played with sixteen participants who each played against each other once in the league system. It began on September 6th and ended on December 29th, 1968. Qualified for the Nacional tournament were the six best-placed teams in the Torneo Metropolitano groups and the four best representatives of the previously second-highest division.

At the end of the Torneo Nacional Vélez Sársfield was able to prevail and was the first time in the club's history of Argentine football champions.

Championship playoff

Since the top three Vélez Sársfield, River Plate and Racing Club Avellaneda were tied, a decision-making round consisting of these three teams had to decide on the 1968 Nacional champions. It was played in free-for-all mode. In the end, Vélez Sársfield secured the championship due to the more goals scored against River Plate after both teams had three points and a goal difference of +2.
