The Primera División in 1949 was 19 . Playing time of the Argentine football league Primera División . The season had started on April 24, 1949. The last game day was December 6, 1949. Before the season, the number of participants in the league was increased from sixteen teams to now eighteen teams. In 1949 there were still two relegated members, not just one.

Ferro Carril Oeste and Club Atlético Atlanta from Primera B Nacional joined them as promoters . The Racing Club ended the season as champions, succeeding CA Independiente . CA Lanus had to relegate to the Primera B Nacional .

Final game for the runner-up

Since CA River Plate and CA Platense were tied in the final table after the 34th matchday, a playoff for second place in the table was held. Both the first and second leg took place in the stadium of CA San Lorenzo de Almagro , in the Estadio Gasómetro .

Thus CA River Plate was certain as runner-up in the 1949 season, Platense had to be content with third place.

Play-out against relegation

Since it was drawn on points after the first and second leg, another game had to be played to determine who was relegated.

Since this game ended in a draw, there was a fourth game within the playouts against relegation a little later.

This was won 3-2 by Huracán in the stadium of River Plate, whereby Huracán secured the relegation, Lanús, however, had to relegate.
