Sarandí

Sarandí is a city - in the Argentine administrative structure a localidad ( German  district ) - in the district Partido Avellaneda , which is in the southern part of the greater Buenos Aires area in Argentina . The center of Sarandí is about 10 km south of Buenos Aires and is connected to the Argentine capital by public transport. Sarandí was founded in 1890 and had a population of 60,752 in 2001, making it the second largest city in the Partido after Wilde .

The leather processing industry is the city's main source of income and has been criticized for contaminating the Río Matanza-Riachuelo . The Río de la Plata is a few hundred meters from Sarandí's eastern district border. Due to the industrial character of the southern metropolitan area of ​​Buenos Aires, however, this area is rarely frequented by tourists. The ecological situation also prevents bathing in the Río de la Plata or in the Río Matanza-Riachuelo.

The football club Arsenal de Sarandí , founded in 1957 and named after the London Arsenal Football Club , plays at the local Estadio Julio H. Grondona and won the Copa Sudamericana in 2007 .

Sarandi is a local name for the reddish button bush. Several cities and settlements in Argentina and Brazil were named after him. The largest among them is Sarandi in the Brazilian state of Paraná .
