history

The Estadio Julio Humberto Grondona was built in 1964 and opened on August 22nd of the same year. It is located in Partido Avellaneda , an industrial suburb of Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires . In Avellaneda, the Estadio Julio H. Grondona is the third largest stadium behind the Estadio Presidente Perón des Racing Club and the Estadio Libertadores de América by CA Independiente , both of which hold more than fifty thousand spectators. Just behind the Estadio Julio H. Grondona is the Estadio Nueva España , where Deportivo Español plays and fits eighteen thousand people. The Estadio Julio H. Grondona is named after Julio Grondona (* 1931), an Argentine football official. Grondona founded the Arsenal de Sarandí club together with his brother in 1957 and chaired it until 1976. Grondona has been a member of the FIFA Executive Committee since 1988 and is currently President of the Argentine Football Association since 1979 .

The Estadio Julio H. Grondona is used by the Arsenal de Sarandí football club as a venue for home games. The club has never won the Argentine championship so far. The greatest success in the club's history is winning the Copa Sudamericana 2007 , when Club America from Mexico was in the final with 2: 3 in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City and 2: 1 in the Estadio Presidente Perón in Avellaneda, the Estadio Julio H. Grondona with its 18,000 seats too small for such a final, which was defeated by the away goals rule. Arsenal de Sarandí currently plays in Argentina's top football league, the Primera División .
