Club Social, Deportivo y Cultural Español (until 2003 Club Deportivo Español ) is an Argentine football club from Buenos Aires , the capital of the country. The club was founded in 1956 and plays its home games at the Estadio Nueva España . Deportivo Español currently plays in the Primera B Metropolitana , the third Argentinian league.

history

Deportivo Español was founded on October 12, 1956 under the name Club Deportivo Español in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires. The founding date was chosen as a memento of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus on October 12th 1492, the name of the association is derived from this historical fact, as Columbus sailed for the Spanish crown and for a long time under the area that is now Argentina Spanish rule.

In the early years, Deportivo Español played in the lower divisions of Argentine football. 1958 succeeded with the first place in the Tercera de Ascenso the promotion to the Primera C, which one finished in the season 1960 as well as later again in the season 1979 as a master and could be promoted to the second division. At the time when Deportivo Español played second class for the first time, the club had a player under contract with Carlos Bilardo , who would later celebrate great successes , especially as a coach with Estudiantes de La Plata and the Argentine national football team . Bilardo played for Deportivo Español from 1961 to 1965 before joining Estudiantes de La Plata.

Deportivo Español really caused a sensation in the 1985/86 season when they finished third behind CA River Plate and CA Newell's Old Boys in the Primera División , which they were promoted to in 1985 as Primera B champions . A third place in the table was achieved two more times, namely in 1988/89 and 1992 in the Clausura. At that time, Deportivo Español was at its best in terms of sport. At that time, players such as José Luis Brown and Héctor Enrique , both world champions from 1986 , who were also coached by Carlos Bilardo in the national team, or the Uruguayan World Cup participant from 1986, José Batista, played for the club.

With the descent from the Primera División after the end of the 1997/98 season, the successful times of Deportivo Español ended. Since 1997 the club has been shuttling between the second and third league. After relegation to the Primera B Metropolitana, the third division, in 2003, the club declared bankrupt and was dissolved. A new club was launched by the fans as a successor club, which was given the name Club Social, Deportivo y Cultural Español , or Deportivo Español for short . The Argentine Football Association accepted the re-establishment and today the club is back in the third division.
