- 17 / May 18 : The German Football and Cricket Federation is founded. It was founded as an alternative to the Association of German Football Players , which, primarily at the instigation of the BFC Germania 1888, does not allow foreign (especially British) players and officials. Members are BFC Frankfurt 1885 , BTuFC Viktoria 89 , BFC Vorwärts 1890 , BTuFC Alemannia 90 , BFC Stern 1889 , BFC Concordia 1890 , BTuFC Hohenzollern 1890 , BFC Norden 1891 , TuFC Columbia 1891 Adlershof , Berliner Cricket Club 1883 , Niederschönweider Cricket Club 1891 as well as the first foreign representative of DFV 1878 Hanover (played almost only soccer with picking up the ball, i.e. rugby ) and The English FC 1890 Berlin .
- December 15th : The first basketball game takes place on the basis of thirteen rules devised by James Naismith .

- May 21 : The heavyweight boxing match between the American James J. Corbett and the Australian Peter “Black Prince” Jackson ends in a draw after 61 rounds due to the exhaustion of both opponents.

- September 6th : Pierre Giffard from Le Petit Journal organizes the Paris – Brest – Paris cycle race for the first time .
- September 9th : Charles Terront , the winner of the first Paris – Brest – Paris bike race organized on the initiative of the newspaper Le Petit Journal , arrives back in Paris after 71:22 hours of driving. Another 97 of 206 drivers who started followed, the last of which took ten days to complete the route.
- The Bordeaux – Paris cycle race is organized for the first time.
- George Lacy Hillier initiates the construction of the Herne Hill Velodrome .

- 23 / 24 January : The German Oskar Uhlig is winner of the 1891 European Figure Skating Championships in Hamburg.
- February 28 : Oscar Grundén , Sweden, runs the 500 meters speed skating in Stockholm in 50.8 s.

- May 29th : The Teutoburg Brackwede (Bielefeld) cycling club is founded.
- September 28 : The Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club is founded in Montevideo.
- November 17th : The Karlsruhe soccer club is founded.
- The Internazionale Torino football club , the oldest Italian football club , is created through the merger of the Torino Football and Cricket Club and Nobili Torino .
