Seven members of the International Olympic Committee in Athens

• February 14 : The Dansk Idræts-Forbund , from which the Danish Olympic Committee develops, is founded through the merger of 18 national sports federations.
• April 6th to 15th : The 1st Olympic Games take place in Athens . Only men take part in the first modern Olympic Games. There are competitions in the disciplines of fencing , weightlifting , athletics , cycling on the track and on the street, wrestling , shooting , swimming , tennis and gymnastics .
• April 6th : On the occasion of the Olympic Games, the ELTA is issuing a series of stamps that contribute significantly to the financing of the Games.
• April 6 : The first modern Olympic champion is the American James Connolly , who wins the triple jump competition with a lead of over one meter.
• April 10th : The Greek Spyridon Louis becomes Olympic champion in the first modern marathon in 2:58:50 hours.

• September 23 : The German fencing championships in Berlin in 1896 represent the first attempt at a national championship in sport fencing. Only individual championships in the weapons saber and foil are fought .

• May 5th : 1. FC Pforzheim is founded.
• May 13th : VfB Leipzig is founded.
• May 25 : The German Football Club Prague is founded.
• June 15 : The Magdeburg FC Viktoria 1896 is founded.
• July 7 : The Leipzig Ball Game Association is founded.

Members of Terra Pila on Theresienwiese

• September 5th : Several high school students and students found the "Association for Lawn Sports" Terra Pila in Munich , from which the 1st Munich FC 1896 later developed. At the beginning, baseball and fistball are mainly played on Theresienwiese . It is not known when the club will turn to football .

• January 4th : Harry Nelson Pillsbury and Emanuel Lasker play the game Pillsbury - Lasker, Saint Petersburg 1896 .
• November 7th : The 1896 World Chess Championship between Emanuel Lasker and Wilhelm Steinitz begins. It lasts until January 14, 1897 .

• February 2 : The Magdeburg swimming club from 1896 is founded.

• June 28 : The Swiss Lawn Tennis Association is founded in Bern , the first national tennis association in continental Europe. The aim is to regulate the tournament scene and play a Swiss championship.

• The Free Gymnastics Federation Frankfurt am Main is founded.

Winter sports

• February 9 : The first world figure skating championship is held in Saint Petersburg , organized by the International Figure Skating Union. The first winner in the competition, which was initially only designed for men, was the German Gilbert Fuchs .
• November 7th : The Prince's Skating Club in Hammersmith is founded. In the same year, the Princes Ice Hockey Club was founded by Peter Patton .
