- February 14 : The Dansk Idræts-Forbund , from which the Danish Olympic Committee develops, is founded through the merger of 18 national sports federations.
- April 6th to 15th : The 1st Olympic Games take place in Athens . Only men take part in the first modern Olympic Games. There are competitions in the disciplines of fencing , weightlifting , athletics , cycling on the track and on the street, wrestling , shooting , swimming , tennis and gymnastics .
- April 6th : On the occasion of the Olympic Games, the ELTA is issuing a series of stamps that contribute significantly to the financing of the Games.
- April 6 : The first modern Olympic champion is the American James Connolly , who wins the triple jump competition with a lead of over one meter.
- April 10th : The Greek Spyridon Louis becomes Olympic champion in the first modern marathon in 2:58:50 hours.
