• April 3 : Cambridge defeats Oxford in the Boat Race in 22'03 ".

• Scotland and England are jointly declared winners of the 1886 Home Nations Championship after the tournament was abandoned due to a dispute between the associations.
• The federations of Ireland , Scotland and Wales set up the International Rugby Football Board over rule disputes with the English Rugby Football Union .

• January 11th : The first official World Chess Championship begins. In the duel that lasted until March 29, Wilhelm Steinitz defeated his opponent Johannes Zukertort with 10: 5 and thus became the first world chess champion . The demonstration board invented by Johann Jacob Löwenthal will be used for the first time for the audience .

• At the event in Wimbledon , William Renshaw from Great Britain wins against his compatriot Herbert Lawford 6–0 5–7 6–3 6–4.
• In the women's class, the Englishwoman Blanche Bingley defeated her compatriot Maud Watson 6–3 6–3.

• March: In Belfast is by workers of Linfield Spinning Mill of Linfield Football Club founded. The Irish football club was Protestant from the very beginning.
• May 17th : The Scottish football club FC Motherwell is created through the merger of the two corporate sports clubs Glencairn and Alpha .
• September 1st : The Grasshopper Club Zurich is founded.
• Workers at Royal Arsenal in Woolwich , London, set up Dial Square football club , now Arsenal FC . On December 11th they won their first game against the Eastern Wanderers 6-0.

• The rowing club RC Germania Tegel 1886 is founded by five engineers from the Germania shipyard .
• The Washington Nationals baseball team is formed and plays in the National League .

• August 23 : The Englishman Walter George , who recently switched to the professionals due to lack of competition, running "of the century race" in against the Scots William Cummings , the mile (1609.36 m) of the men in 4:12 3 / 4 minutes, a time that the American Norman Taber will not beat until 1915 .
