Herbert Lawford
Herbert Fortescue Lawford (born May 15, 1851 in London , † April 20, 1925 in Dess , Scotland ) was a British tennis player and 1887 winner of the Wimbledon Championships .
Life
Lawford was born in Bayswater, London, in 1851 . He attended the Repton School and then studied at the University of Edinburgh .
Lawford participated in the second edition of the Wimbledon Championships in 1878 at the age of 27 . Between 1880 and 1888 he was there six times in the finals, but could only win the title in 1887 when his rival William Renshaw was injured. He also won the first edition of the British Indoor Championships in 1885 and the Irish Championships from 1884 to 1886. Most recently, in 1889, he took part in the Wimbledon tournament.
In addition to the ten years younger twin brothers William and Ernest Renshaw , Lawford is considered the strongest player of the 1880s. While the Renshaws' strengths lay in their volleys and smashes on the net, Lawford was an excellent baseline player. He was one of the first players to use topspin in tennis .
Lawford died in Scotland in 1925. In 2006 he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame .
