The Ruder-Club Tegel 1886 was founded as RC Germania Tegel in 1886 by five engineers from the Germania shipyard. The association was initially housed in a wooden shed that only housed a single boat. Since the Borsig machine factory was moved to Berlin-Tegel in 1898, the rowing club quickly gained members. Among the most prominent were the company owners Ernst Borsig and Conrad von Borsig . They also made it possible to build a new boathouse on the old beach promenade.

The Ruder-Club Tegel 1886 (RCT) got its name after the merger of the RC Germania Tegel with the RC Nordstern in 1948 . In 1974 the RC Sparta was added. The association has had its headquarters in Gabrielenstrasse since 1952.

With over 450 members, including around 100 children and young people, the RCT is one of the three largest rowing clubs in Berlin and is the oldest sports club in the largest Berlin district, Reinickendorf. Therefore the association is also represented in the Kulturforum Reinickendorf.

With an Olympic victory , six world championship titles , three U23 world championship titles , two junior world championship titles , over 103 German championship titles in all age groups (U-17 to senior citizens) and 44 national competition victories in the strong children's group, the RCT is one of the most successful German rowing clubs.

In 2008 the club was represented with six active members in the Beijing team of the Berlin rowing association. Controversial decisions in the German Rowing Association ultimately prevented possible Olympic participation. Nevertheless, the club was able to end the rowing season 2008 very successfully (the strong children's group was able to convince with six national titles and three national titles, three national titles were also rowed among the juniors and older athletes; supplemented by a runner-up in the German lightweight eighth).
