• 28 / August 29 : England lose to Australia for the first time a Test match at home. The glossy obituary in the Sporting Times established the Ashes , one of the oldest international competitions in sports history.

• February 18 : Ireland loses their first international match against England 0:13. Ireland is the fourth national team in football after England, Scotland and Wales.
• March 15 : The Old Etonians defeat Blackburn Rovers 1-0 in the FA Cup Final at the London Oval .
• April 1st : Queen's Park defeated Dumbarton 4-1 in the Scottish Cup Final . The first game ended 2-2.
