Franz Hörner (born June 5, 1882 in Odenheim , † April 30, 1944 in Mannheim ) was a German racing car driver .

Career

Franz Hörner joined Benz & Cie. On September 17, 1906 . in Mannheim. His trainers included the works drivers Victor Hémery and Fritz Erle , with whose help he developed into a successful driver.

At the opening of the AVUS race track in Berlin on September 24 and 25, 1921, Franz Hörner and his co-driver Paul Gass won the XB class (cars with up to 10 taxable horsepower and hanging valves ) in a Benz 10/30 hp . Over the distance of 157.4 km he reached the average speed of 118.1 km / h. In September 1922 he won the Semmering hill climb on the Blitzen-Benz with an average of 79.1 km / h.

At the first ever European Grand Prix , which was held at the Autodromo di Milano in Monza as part of the Italian Grand Prix on September 9, 1923 , Hörner took fifth place behind his teammate Ferdinando Minoia with the Benz teardrop car that was used for the first time .

Franz Hörner died on April 30, 1944 at the age of 61 in Mannheim.
