Seltenberg nature reserve

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hunstein nature reserve with a size of 4.2 hectares is located south of Calle , in the so-called Caller Switzerland , in the urban area of Meschede . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 1994 with the Meschede landscape plan.

Area description

The NSG is a species-rich woodruff beech forest with up to 5 high rocks with a block pile on the northern slope of the approximately 350 m high Seltenberg. The forest is rich in ferns. On the rocky ridge there are extensive herds of pearl grass on the sun side and ring weed on the shadow side. The rocks are rich in moss and lichen. The rocks have small ferns locally. Individual hornbeams with several shoots grow on the upper edge of the rock. Below the rocks is a small, partially overgrounded block heap.

Protection purpose

The NSG is intended to protect this structure and species-rich rock-forest biotope complex. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
