Kalkwäldchen nature reserve Schüren

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The nature reserve Kalkwäldchen Schüren with a size of 3.1 hectares is located east of Schüren in the urban area of Meschede . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 1994 with the Meschede landscape plan. The NSG borders directly on the village. The Meschede-Schüren airfield is directly to the south .

Area description

The NSG is a red beech forest with limestone rocks. Partly there are very old beeches in the lime-rich rock-forest complex. Individual deciduous trees of different ages are added to the beech tree. From the airport plateau, a long ledge of rock falls 10 m deep into the valley. The limestone cliffs are rich in moss and lichen and have typical, fern-rich rock vegetation. Below the ledge there is a part großblockige, partly moss rich stone run with a large Bingelkraut backlog. The herbaceous layer of the forest is very species-rich.

Protection purpose

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
