The Hainberg nature reserve with a size of 13.5 hectares is located west of Meschede . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 1994 with the Meschede landscape plan.

Area description

The NSG is the 310  m above sea level. NHN rising wooded ridge of the Hainberg north of the Ruhr or the Upper Ruhr Valley Railway . In the NSG, oaks and other deciduous trees grow in an old mixed oak forest that is rich in structure and tree species and has hardly been used for decades. On the southern mountain slope there is a field cut with up to 15 m high, almost vertical rock walls. This section of the field was created during the construction of the Upper Ruhr Valley Railway.

Strong oaks with a chest height diameter of over 0.8 m predominate on the mountain slopes. There are many hornbeams on the ridge. There are many old beech trees in the southwest . The forest is mostly built up in layers with young to ancient trees. He has locally heaped lying and standing dead wood. Rock outcrops and ledges in the area of the south-facing rock zone are overgrown by trees and species of fringes. The oldest and strongest oaks in the urban area of Meschede can be found on the Hainberg.

The subsoil consists of greywacke and clay slate. On the other hand, limestones of the so-called Hellefeld limestone emerge on the southern steep slope.

Rare animal and plant species are found in the NSG.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the forest with its diverse inventory of species.

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area was declared a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
