Erlenwald nature reserve south of Frenkhausen

The nature reserve Erlenwald south of Frenkhausen with a size of 1.5  hectares is located southwest of Frenkhausen in the urban area of Meschede . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 1994 with the Meschede landscape plan.

Area description

The NSG is a small red alder moist forest on the valley floor of a small source stream tributary of the Kesselbach. The age-matched forest has a tall herbaceous layer of nitrophile characteristics. There are some older alder stick rashes along the source stream. A typical spring corridor also comes into play here at certain points. The alder wet forest is a small, locally valuable eco-cell in the branching network of flowing water and biotopes of the Kesselbach. The nature reserve valley area of the Kesselbach lies to the west and north of the NSG, although it is not directly adjacent.

Protection purpose

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
