The nature reserve Hölzchen with a size of 1.7 hectares is located north of Wallen in the urban area of Meschede . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 1994 with the Meschede landscape plan. To the south of the NSG are fields and grassland that belong to the landscape protection area near-by-town open spaces near Wallen . The forest to the west, north and east is part of the Meschede landscape protection area .

Area description

The NSG is the remains of a juniper heather on the flat back of the hand fled. The heather in the eastern part of the NSG is grazed. A field wood with oaks of middle age is located in the western part of the NSG. There is a small hunting lodge inside the wood.

The specialist information system of the State Office for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection in North Rhine-Westphalia explains the NSG: The structurally rich biotope complex is a valuable refuge within the otherwise intensively used agricultural fields of the Innersauerland depression around Meschede-Wallen.

Protection purpose

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
