Dump site south of Blüggelscheid

The nature reserve dump site of the Alexander pit with a size of 1.7 hectares is located south of Blüggelscheidt in the urban area of Meschede . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 1994 with the Meschede landscape plan.

Area description

The NSG is the southern part of the former heap of the Alexander mine. The NSG forms a biotope complex made up of a stream, rough meadows, bushes, a pond, heaps, tunnels and forest. The area is strong. A near-natural spring stream in the south of the NSG is piped after a short stretch of flow. Only at the northern re- exit of the cased stream is there an impressive ore flower dominating the entire embankment . The ore flower occurs in the Sauerland only on locations rich in heavy metals. As a relic of the earlier mining there is a mine-walled tunnel mouth and the dump areas in the NSDG.

Protection purpose

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
