The nature reserve Giesmecketal with a size of 19.3 hectares is located in the Arnsberg Forest northeast of Freienohl in the urban area of Meschede . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 1994 with the Meschede landscape plan. The NSG consists of two areas.

Area description

The NSG is the lower reaches of the Giesmecke up to the confluence with the Ruhr with forest, grassland and spring areas. In the forest there are wet areas with alder as the main stocking.

Rare animal and plant species are found in the NSG.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the stream areas and forest with its species inventory.

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
