The nature reserve Schmalenaus Bruch with a size of 2.3 hectares is located directly on the northern city limits of Meschede in the Arnsberg Forest . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 1994 with the Meschede landscape plan. In the north, the Arnsberg Forest nature reserve borders the town of Warstein in the Soest district .

Area description

The NSG is a break area with forest and meadows. It covers part of the source horizon of the Große Schmalenau ; its defined source is only a few meters away in the north adjacent NSG Arnsberger Wald. The forest in the NSG is a quarry forest with red alder and birch trees, while the grassland has wet and wet meadows. Rare animal and plant species are found in the NSG.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the break area with its species inventory.

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
