The Große Schmalenau is a 12.4 km long, left tributary of the Heve in the North Rhine-Westphalian districts of Soest and Hochsauerlandkreis , Germany . It is located in the municipal areas of Warstein , Möhnesee and Arnsberg .
geography
The stream rises in the Arnsberg Forest on the northern flank of the New Mountain at an altitude of 478 m above sea level. NHN in the Soest district (in the Allagen district of Warstein ). First flowing in a northerly direction, the course turns to the west after about two kilometers. The Lüttmecke, coming from the south, flows west of the Schmalenausberg . Now the Große Schmalenau lies for about 4 km on the border of the Soest and Hochsauerlandkreis districts. The brook is sometimes exactly on the border and sometimes in one of the two circles, which is due to the changes in the course of the brook over the past hundred and fifty years. South of the Freienohler Höhe the stream turns to the northwest and flows east of Neuhaus at 240 m above sea level. NHN in the Heve .
With a height difference of 222 meters, the mean bed gradient is 17.9 ‰. The 18.309 km² catchment area is drained to the North Sea via the Heve, Möhne , Ruhr and Rhine .

nature and environment
The Großer Schmalenau is located in two nature reserves throughout the course : in the Arnsberger Wald nature reserve (NSG SO-029 in Warstein and Möhnesee) and in the Breitenbruch-Neuhaus nature reserve (NSG HSK-043 in Arnsberg). A few meters above the source of the Great Schmalenau lies on Mescheder urban area also the small-area nature reserve Schmalenaus fraction comprising a portion of the source horizon covers.
The Große Schmalenau is located in the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park . The kingfisher breeds by the stream and the black stork , which breeds in the adjacent forests, is a frequent food guest.
The Große Schmalenau was part of a LIFE project of the European Union, “Bachtäler im Arnsberger Wald” , which ran from 2009 to 2014 . In this project were u. a. Spruce stands by the stream converted into near-natural forests and previous stream straightening and bank barriers removed.
