SELEX Galileo
SELEX Galileo was an arms and electronics company of the Italian Finmeccanica group, based in Rome and Basildon . The company was created between 2005 and 2009 through the merger of several British and Italian companies, some of which could look back on a history of more than 100 years. On January 1, 2013, SELEX Galileo merged with SELEX Sistemi Integrati and SELEX Elsag in Selex Electronic Systems or Selex ES for short , the latter in Leonardo-Finmeccanica on January 1, 2016 .
Business areas
SELEX Galileo mainly manufactured avionics and radar equipment for aircraft. There were also unmanned aerial vehicles ( Falco ) and various electronic systems for military and police purposes. The company employed approximately 7,000 people in Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States. In 2008, sales amounted to 1.645 billion euros.
history
The Italian share of the company goes back mainly to Officine Galileo, which was founded in 1864 . This company from Florence built fire control systems , among other things . In 2000, Galileo Avionica SpA was created through the merger of Officine Galileo and several other companies. These included FIAR ( Fabbrica Italiana Apparecchiature Radioelettriche ), founded in 1941 , which had been producing radar devices for aircraft in Milan since the 1960s (especially the Grifo series), as well as Meteor ( Mirach 100 ), Aleco, Tecnospazio, Cetev and parts of Alenia . Galileo Avionica became a Finmeccanica company.
On the British side, the history of SELEX Galileo goes back to the telecommunications company Marconi Company , founded by Guglielmo Marconi in 1897 , which was taken over by English Electric in 1946 and then taken over by General Electric Company in 1968 . The parts of the GEC company that dealt with military technology were given the name Marconi ( GEC-Marconi , previously various other name combinations with “Marconi”). In 1990 the company took over part of the Ferranti Defense Division in Crewe Toll ( Edinburgh ). In 1998 GEC-Marconi Radar and Defense Systems merged with the avionics department of Alenia Difesa to form Alenia Marconi Systems (AMS). In 1999, British Aerospace and the remaining military technology parts of GEC ( Marconi Electronic Systems ) formed the new group BAE Systems . BAE Systems and Finmeccanica held the shares of Alenia Marconi Systems from 1999 to 2005 .
On May 3, Finmeccanica and BAE Systems decided to dissolve AMS with the Eurosystems Transaction . The majority was taken over by Finmeccanica, which formed various companies called "SELEX", including SELEX Sistemi Integrati , SELEX Communications and SELEX Sensors and Airborne Systems .
The Finmeccanica share in SELEX Sensors and Airborne Systems initially amounted to 75 percent. In March 2007 Finmeccanica took over the remaining 25 percent from BAE Systems for 400 million euros and then renamed the company SELEX Galileo . In the UK it traded under SELEX Galileo Ltd , in the USA under SELEX Galileo Inc and in Italy under SELEX Galileo SpA
On January 1st, 2013, SELEX Galileo merged with SELEX Elsag and SELEX Sistemi Integrati in SELEX ES.
