Leonardo (formerly Finmeccanica ), based in Rome is an Italian aviation and aerospace and defense group . In 2018, the group employed around 46,500 people, the majority of them in Italy. Other important locations are in the USA, Great Britain, France, Poland and Germany. Since the 1990s, the former state holding company Finmeccanica has controlled almost all Italian defense, aerospace and aerospace companies.
history
Finmeccanica
Finmeccanica was founded in 1948 as a subsidiary of the state-owned IRI and initially controlled machine and vehicle construction companies such as Alfa Romeo and Ansaldo . In the aviation sector Finmeccanica was only represented by Aeritalia , the other aviation and defense companies such as Agusta , Aermacchi , Breda or Selenia remained private or belonged to other IRI holdings such as Efim or Stet. At the end of the 1980s, Finmeccanica initiated a concentration of the various aerospace companies, electronics and weapons manufacturers, a process that intensified significantly in the 1990s in the wake of rationalization and privatization measures in the state-controlled industry. Alongside Fincantieri, Finmeccanica was the only former state holding that emerged stronger from the economic and financial crises of the 1990s and was then able to establish itself on the world market as the most important Italian technology group. In 2004 the group took over the British helicopter manufacturer Westland , and in 2008 the US armaments company DRS Technologies for over 5 billion dollars.
In 2011 the Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti announced an intensification of the investigations into a corruption affair with Finmeccanica at the center, which had been ongoing for a year . In this context, the head of the Italian air traffic control system ENAV , Guido Pugliesi, the sales manager of the Finmeccanica subsidiary SELEX Sistemi Integrati , Manlio Fiore, and an accountant, Marco Iannilli, were arrested for tax fraud and money laundering . Proceedings were also initiated against the President of Finmeccanica, Pier Francesco Guarguaglini, who resigned at the beginning of December 2011, because of illegal money accounts abroad and bribery.
In May 2012, the 59-year-old atomic manager of a subsidiary of Finmeccanica, Roberto Adinolfi, was shot in the right knee, a letter of confession was published by the cell "Olga" of the Federazione Anarchica Informale , which announced seven further attacks on Finmeccanica managers. In February 2013, Finmeccanica boss Giuseppe Orsi was arrested on suspicion of corruption, the arrest warrant was issued against the boss of AgustaWestland, Bruno Spagnolini, and extradition requests were made against two managers living in Switzerland. Former Italian police chief Giovanni De Gennaro and former railway chief Mauro Moretti took over the management of Finmeccanica .
Creation of Leonardo
De Gennaro and Moretti initiated a comprehensive reorganization and rationalization, in the course of which various business areas were abandoned and the remaining subsidiaries, including the helicopter manufacturer AgustaWestland , the aircraft construction company Alenia Aermacchi , the defense and electronics company Selex ES and the defense companies Oto Melara and Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei was absorbed into the so-called One Company with the old holding name Finmeccanica and initially formed seven departments there. In 2016, the restructured company was temporarily called "Leonardo-Finmeccanica", at the beginning of January 2017 the name was changed to Leonardo and the company was named after the universal scholar Leonardo da Vinci, who, among other things, presented designs for various aircraft and war devices, including propellers , Submarines , siege devices and tanks. In May 2017, the Board of Directors appointed Alessandro Profumo as the new Chief Executive Officer . At the end of 2018, as part of a reorganization, the number of departments was reduced from seven to five by merging the three former departments of armaments, armament electronics, and avionics and space travel.
Business areas and organization
Leonardo develops and builds airplanes, helicopters, satellites, rockets and space components, equipment for communication and information technology, armored vehicles, torpedoes and ship guns. The construction of high-speed trains , subway vehicles, tram cars and buses was abandoned in the train of reorganization; AnsaldoBreda , Ansaldo STS and BredaMenarinibus , which are active in these areas , were sold in 2015 (to Hitachi Transportation Systems and Industria Italiana Autobus ). With the sale of Ansaldo Energia , the company also withdrew from the energy sector.
After incorporating the companies mentioned above, Leonardo consists of five divisions or departments:
The helicopter department took over the program from AgustaWestland . These include the models AW101 , AW109 , AW139 and its variants and AW169 and the tiltrotor - convertible aircraft AW609 . The Polish helicopter manufacturer PZL Świdnik , which has been part of AgustaWestland since 2010 , also belongs to this department . In January 2020, the purchase of the Swiss helicopter project Kopter was announced, which will be integrated into the group as a competence center for single-engine helicopters.
The aircraft construction department is the successor to companies that were merged into Alenia Aermacchi over time . Today it produces the trainer aircraft M-346 , M-345 and SF-260 and the transport aircraft C-27J . Leonardo is involved in the production of the ATR 42 and ATR 72 regional aircraft, with the aircraft construction department being responsible for the military variants of the two types of aircraft. It is also involved in the production of the Eurofighter Typhoon and Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jets . In addition, it produces unmanned aerial vehicles or is involved in their development and construction.
The aircraft components department works as a supplier for Avions de Transport Régional , Boeing , Airbus , Dassault Aviation , Embraer and Suchoi . The fuselage of the ATR 42 and ATR 72 will be built in Pomigliano d'Arco , fuselage segments and other parts of the Boeing 787 will be produced in Foggia and Grottaglie , a fuselage section of the Airbus A380 and components of the Airbus A320 family will also come from Leonardo. This Leonardo department produces engine nacelles for all of the aircraft manufacturers mentioned .
The armaments and electronics department succeeds Selex ES , Oto Melara and WASS and is responsible for C⁴ISR or ISTAR systems, avionics , on- board radar systems, air traffic control systems, long- range air reconnaissance radar devices such as the Selex RAT 31DL , the multi-function radar Kronos, Future Soldier systems and a number of other sensors and components for space missions. In addition, this department produces ship guns, including the well-known 76/62 Compact and 127/64 Lightweight , the Vulcano ammunition family , the Freccia and Centauro 2 armored vehicles , unmanned sea and land vehicles and the Black Shark, MU90 and A244 / S torpedoes . There are also mail sorting systems and baggage handling systems .
The products of the department for security and information systems are primarily geared towards the needs of security and police authorities. The focus is on information security and monitoring systems.
