Alenia Aeronautica was an aerospace company of the Italian Finmeccanica group. It was created in the early 1990s through the merger of Aeritalia and Selenia . On January 1, 2012, Alenia Aeronautica was merged with Aermacchi by its parent company Finmeccanica (now Leonardo ) to form Alenia Aermacchi .

history

Aeritalia

Aeritalia was founded in Naples in 1969 when the aircraft manufacturers Fiat and Finmeccanica merged with Aerfer and Salmoiraghi to form a new group. For a long time, Fiat Aviazione had primarily built military aircraft, including the G.91 light fighter aircraft , which was also used in large numbers by the Bundeswehr Air Force . The aircraft engine and marine turbine division of Fiat remained under the name Fiat Avio until 2003 with the group .

In 1976, Aeritalia became 100% state-owned. The company was Italy's most important aircraft manufacturer. The range encompassed civil and military aircraft construction, drones, avionics, aircraft and helicopter drives, and also satellite technology.

Aeritalia was involved in the construction of the Tornado fighter aircraft and the AMX light fighter-bomber and manufactured the G.222 transport aircraft (now the Alenia C-27). For a long time it was a subcontractor of McDonnell Douglas in civil aircraft construction and built parts of the fuselage of the MD-80 series in Italy . For reasons of industrial policy, the Italian state airline Alitalia was a regular customer of McDonnell Douglas for many years. In addition, parts of the Boeing 767 were produced, especially after the takeover of McDonnell Douglas by Boeing . In the 1980s, Aeritalia and Aérospatiale founded the ATR company .

Both Aeritalia and Alitalia used to belong to the now dissolved state holding IRI .

Selenia

Selenia focused on the areas of radar , sensors and avionics .

fusion

In 1990, the parent company Finmeccanica merged its two daughters Aeritalia and Selenia to form the new Alenia. From their divisions, independent companies of the Finmeccanica group emerged, some of which were merged into European aviation and armaments groups:

The parent company Finmeccanica handed over control of the aircraft manufacturer Aermacchi to Alenia Aeronautica in 2005 , which is why its products were known as Alenia Aermacchi even before the merger . Aeronavali, a Finmeccanica company involved in aircraft maintenance and refurbishment, also changed its company to Alenia Aeronavali . Finmeccanica's helicopter manufacturer AgustaWestland and the engine manufacturer Avio Aero were never involved in Alenia. However, AgustaWestland took over production facilities from Alenia Aeronavali .

Alenia Aeronautica was one of the most important parts of the Finmeccanica group until 2011. In the military sector it was involved in the construction of the Eurofighter and the Joint Strike Fighter , in the civil sector it manufactured aircraft components as a freelancer for both Boeing and Airbus . In addition, Alenia built regional aircraft together with EADS (formerly Aérospatiale ) under the name Avions de Transport Régional (ATR) and also supplied the Dassault company .
