history

The company was founded in 1905 as a joint venture between Vickers and Stahlwerke Terni and was named Vickers-Terni . During the First World War it built cannons and artillery pieces from 40 mm caliber.

In 1929 there was a merger with the shipbuilding company Cantiere navale fratelli Orlando in Livorno and the shipyard Cantieri navali Odero in Sestri Ponente , the company name (company) was changed to "Odero Terni Orlando", hence the abbreviation OTO . During the Second World War , mainly heavy naval guns and submarines were built.

Immediately after the war, the company started producing tractors and other civilian products. In 1953 it changed its name to "Oto Melara". The company soon concentrated again on the manufacture of military products and had its first successful export model with the mountain howitzer model 56 , caliber 105 / L14. In the years that followed, the company became known for its excellent naval guns (especially the 76/62 series ), which were installed by 53 navies on over 1000 warships. In the area of land systems, Oto Melara cooperated with Fiat and IVECO . The Finmeccanica company Breda from Brescia was completely taken over by Oto Melara in 2001. This is why some products in the land systems division were named "OTO Breda".
