The Ariete ( German " Rammbock ", " Widder " ), original name C1 Ariete and also known internationally as Ariete MBT , is an Italian main battle tank . It has the latest optical and digital image enlargers as well as fire control systems and is capable of night combat. The first copies were delivered in 1995, the last so far in August 2002.
history
The Ariete was developed together with the Centauro armored vehicle in the late 1980s by a consortium of companies consisting of Oto Melara , Fiat and IVECO (Consorzio IVECO-Oto Melara - CIO) for the Italian army . The armored hull and the turbo-diesel engine with currently 1,250 HP (919 kW) are manufactured by IVECO / Fiat, the turret with the main weapon and the fire control system come from Oto Melara.
From 1995 to 2002 a total of 200 of these tanks were put into service with four different units. Originally, a total of 300 (according to other sources 400) tanks were to be procured between 1990 and 1994, but due to financial problems there was a considerable delay in the program and preferred procurement of the Centauro .
The development of the upgraded "Ariete 2" has since been stopped; the tanks that have already been procured are gradually being upgraded to the "Ariete 2" standard (more powerful engine with 1,600 hp (1,177 kW), common rail injection, additional armor). The original designation "C-1" is practically no longer used.
