Mauro Moretti (born October 29, 1953 in Rimini ) is an Italian engineer and manager. Until 2017 he was CEO and General Manager of the Italian technology company Leonardo (formerly Finmeccanica) Moretti is President of the AeroSpace and Defense Industries Association of Europe (ASD, European Association of the Aerospace and Defense Industries ; since March 2015), Chairman of Italy-Japan Business Group (since September 2015), Honorary Chairman of the Italian Industries Federation for Aerospace, Defense and Security (AIAD; since July 2014) and President of the Italian FS Foundation (since 2013).

Mauro Moretti was CEO of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (2006-2014) and Chairman of the Community of European Railways . He was also mayor of the municipality of Mompeo (Lazio) from 2004-2014 and worked as a trade unionist.

Life

Mauro Moretti joined Ferrovie dello Stato (Italian State Railways) a few months after completing his electrical engineering degree at the University of Bologna . He continued his career there and, after winning a public job advertisement, reached a management position in the company. He then held numerous positions in various areas and at various companies in the group. Moretti was Deputy Director of Technologies and System Development Division (December 1991), Director of Technological Development and Rolling Stock Division (March 1993), General Manager of Metropolis, a company within the group that specializes in real estate investment (February 1994).

In December 1997, Moretti was appointed director of the “Area Strategica di Affari Business Strategies” division, which he continued to head even after it was incorporated into the “Infrastructure Division” (July 1999). In February 2001 he became a member of the board of directors of Ferrovie dello Stato. In July of the same year, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana was founded and Moretti was appointed managing director. During his time at Ferrovie dello Stato, Moretti was also a member of the CGIL Trasporti union, where he was promoted to general secretary (1986-1991).

In September 2006 he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Italian State Railways (FS).

In May 2014 the board of directors of the Italian group Finmeccanica appointed Mauro Moretti as the new CEO and general manager of the group. In 2015, Moretti began implementing its restructuring plan to increase the company's competitiveness in global markets. The plan was to transform the company into a more integrated, industrial hub, divided into seven operational divisions. The company's activities were concentrated on the core business aerospace, defense and security and non-strategic items such as transport were sold. In parallel, Moretti introduced plans to reduce debt and costs, and increase profitability. Furthermore, in 2016 Moretti proposed changing the company name from Finmeccanica SpA to Leonardo SpA - based on the name of the Italian scientist Leonardo da Vinci.

On January 31, 2017, Moretti was sentenced in the first instance to 7 years in prison for the Viareggio railway accident .
