Alessandro Profumo (born February 17, 1957 in Genoa ) is an Italian manager and current CEO of Leonardo . Alessandro Profumo was CEO of the major Italian bank Unicredit from 1995-2010 and played a key role in the consolidation of the Italian banking sector.

Life

Alessandro Profumo was the youngest of five sons in an entrepreneurial family. He spent his childhood in Palermo until he was 13 and moved to Milan with his parents in 1970 .

He completed his studies in economics at the Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi in Milan and graduated in 1987 with a degree in business administration .

Alessandro Profumo started working for Banco Lariano in 1977 at the age of 20. In 1987, the manager switched to the management consultancy McKinsey & Company in the financial sector as a consultant . In 1989 he switched to the Boston management consultancy Bain & Company . In 1991 he moved to the board of directors of Riunione Adriatica di Sicurtà , a Milan insurance company that belongs to the Allianz group. As Direttore Centrale (General Manager), he was responsible for banking and para-banking activities.

When RAS acquired a 5% stake in the recently privatized Credito Italiano and then the second largest Italian bank at the time , Alessandro Profumo first took over the seat on the bank's board of directors as Condirettore Centrale ( Deputy General Manager ) for strategic corporate planning and control One year later as Director General ( Chief General Manager ). He was appointed Amministratore Delegato ( Chief Executive Officer - CEO) in 1997, making him the youngest head of a major Italian bank at the age of 40 .

Under his leadership, the UniCredit Group has developed into one of the most profitable banks in Italy and one of the largest banking groups in Europe after a number of acquisitions and restructurings . The owners of the UniCredit Group confirmed Profumo in 2009 with the extension of his term of office.

During his time as CEO, the manager has held other offices in the financial services industry to this day : since 2002 he has been a member of the Board of Directors of Mediobanca SpA, a subsidiary of the UniCredit Group . In 2007 he resigned from his supervisory board mandate at Deutsche Börse AG due to the threat of a conflict of interest between his mandate in Frankfurt and the role of the bank as a major shareholder of the new London-Milan stock exchange . From 2005 (takeover by UniCredit Group in 2005) to January 2009 (completion of the integration) Profumo was chairman of the supervisory board at Bayerische Hypo- und Vereinsbank AG . He has been Chairman of the Supervisory Board of UniCredit Bank Austria AG (formerly Bank-Austria Creditanstalt; takeover by the UniCredit Group from HVB in 2005) since 2006.

After criticizing the bank's commitment to Libya , Profumo resigned as CEO of the Unicredit Group in 2010. At the beginning of 2012 he became CEO of the third largest bank in Italy, Monte dei Paschi di Siena . Since May 2017 he has headed Leonardo SpA , the largest Italian technology company.
