Allagen has been part of the Sauerland town of Warstein in the Soest district , North Rhine-Westphalia , since 1975 . As of April 1, 2018, it had 2,486 inhabitants. The mayor is Gerald Wegen ( CDU ).

history

The settlement Allagen was founded around the year 800, the place name was first mentioned in the 12th century. The founding document of the Grafschaft monastery in the Sauerland for the year 1072, which was previously regarded as the first documentary mention of Allagen, has been recognized as a later forgery since the beginning of the 20th century . A supplement was added to this forged document around the year 1200; and only in this late addendum does the place name Allagen appear. The documentary mention is related to disputes over tithe income, which can be classified in the larger dispute between the Counts of Arnsberg and the Archbishops of Cologne .

This settlement was on the southern slope of the Haar until it was moved to the Möhneufer in the 12th century due to lack of water . At that time, agriculture and forestry were economically important .

Witch hunts took place in Allagen : in 1617 several men and women were executed for alleged witchcraft when the notorious witch judges Heinrich von Schultheiß and Lic. Höxter were leading the witch trials . A book by the pastor in Hirschberg , Michael Stapirius, provides information on this . This sharply condemned the inhuman practices of the commissioners and quotes the defendant Steffen von Niederbergheim , who in 1617, shortly before his execution in Allagen, had said to him as a clergyman: Mr. Michel,. . . I am not a magician, the judges and Scheffen as well as the Commissarius have acted as rascals and thieves for me: then through inexorable torment they forced me to say things which I never thought of, let alone do ... I tell the truth and revocire, they torment me again, and which person can torture, torment and torment at other times.

According to the Prussian rural community code for the province of Westphalia from 1841, the surrounding villages of Westendorf, Oberbergheim, Niederbergheim , Haarhöfe and Allagen were combined to form the community of Allagen. The community of Allagen existed until January 1, 1975, when the village was incorporated into the new town of Warstein. Niederbergheim was separated from Allagen again in 1989 and has been an independent district of Warstein ever since.

Attractions

Today's church is already the fourth church in Allagen. In the 9th century a parish was founded on the Haar, over three centuries later, in 1144, a church was consecrated on the Möhneufer. Except for the tower, this church was completely replaced in 1671 and thus enlarged. But the third Allagen church soon became too small, and the low tower height also disturbed its appearance. Today's St. John's parish church was consecrated on June 11, 1891.

Another attraction is the Dassel house . This villa used to be the home of a manufacturer who had it built in 1841. Later a tower and the north part of the building were added. After the company went bankrupt in the 1860s, there was a change of ownership. After another change of ownership around 20 years later, the Dassel family from Düsseldorf, a branch of the Dassel family , moved into the building and had it completely renovated. The then independent municipality of Allagen was later able to buy the property, the factory building on the site was demolished, and the villa was set into parkland. Today the villa serves as a museum and for club purposes.

At the height of the Lieth near Oberbergheim, between Niederbergheim and Allagen, the Allagen-Niederbergheim village initiative built the Skywalk Möhnetal as part of the Leader project 3 landscape adventure hiking worlds .

education

The Johannesschule, a municipal primary school, is located in Allagen . The local school system has existed since the 18th century, and Johannes Mimberg began teaching in 1708 at the latest.

In the 1950s, a state forest school was set up in Allagen to train prospective foresters. As a result of the reorganization of forestry training in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Allagen forest school was closed in the 1970s.
