Niederbergheim is a district of the town of Warstein in the Soest district in North Rhine-Westphalia . As of January 1, 2017, it had 1,206 inhabitants. It consists of the (geographically) separated parts of Niederbergheim and Oberbergheim.

history

The first documentary mention comes from the founding document of the Grafschaft monastery in the Sauerland ( Schmallenberg ). This document is dated to the year 1072 . In fact, this document is a forgery, a few decades after 1072. However, the mention of the place " Berchheim " (which presumably means Oberbergheim - but see the discussion page!) Is in the last line of this document. This last line was only added to the document around 1200 (in connection with disputes over territory and tithe between the Count of Arnsberg and the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Cologne ). Probably at the same time as the granting of city rights to the neighboring village of Hirschberg by Junggrave Wilhelm von Arnsberg , which was definitely attested for 1308 , Bergheim was also to be elevated to the status of city . This granting of city rights was opposed by the Archbishop of Cologne, who as Duke of Westphalia had the sole right of fortification . In a letter that can no longer be reliably dated, the Archbishop of Cologne, Heinrich von Virneburg, calls on his cities of Soest , Brilon , Rüthen , Marsberg , Geseke , Warstein to take action against the fortifications that have begun in Hirschberg and Bergheim. Obviously this intervention worked. While the fortification and construction of the town in Hirschberg was allowed to begin around 1340 , Bergheim never became a town. Some historians suspect that the Borghagen ridge, which is now in the area of Allagen, is the location of the planned town of Bergheim. A small wall and ditch fortification could come from this time. Other researchers (e.g. Kraft) see Oberbergheim as the intended fortification site for good reasons .

In addition to Niederbergheim, in the Möhnetal area, there is another district of Oberbergheim on the first ridge south of the Haar . The Farming Town Niederbergheim harbored nor end of the 15th century a convent of Augustinian nuns .

Steffen von Niederbergheim was victim of the witch persecution in Hirschberg in 1617 .

Until the municipal reform, which came into force on January 1, 1975, Niederbergheim belonged to the Allagen municipality in the Warstein district , which then became the Allagen district of the city of Warstein. The change from was connected thereto Arnsberg district in the district of Soest . It was not until 1991 that Niederbergheim, which, not least because of the spatial separation, actually always had its own identity, became an independent district.

Infrastructure

The B 516 and L 856 cross in Niederbergheim. The Soest Ost exit of the A 44 is 10 km away. The bus route R 51 Soest - Warstein of the RLG serves the place in the local public transport. In the village there is a communal kindergarten, some handicraft businesses, a bakery, several dining facilities and two campsites. There is a primary school in the neighboring town of Allagen, secondary schools in the towns of Warstein, Rüthen and Soest.

Attractions

Niederbergheimer Mill

Today's Antonius Chapel was built around 1490 and is probably related to the abovementioned founding of the monastery. The oldest construction phase is today's tower section; in 1921 an extensive expansion took place. In 2014 the entire roof and the weathercock were renewed and the facade was repainted.

The most famous sight is the "Niederbergheimer Mühle", which was built in the 18th century. The Möhne was probably used as an energy source as early as the middle of the 16th century.

The Heimatverein Niederbergheim has built an old horizontal gate on the Belecke - Möhnesee cycle path as a technical cultural monument. It is intended as a reminder that numerous people in the village made their living from forest work and wood processing for centuries. The gate comes from a Niederbergheim sawmill that was closed in 1978.

In the southwest of Niederbergheim the Lüsenberg rises to a height of 318 m above sea level. NN. It is worth mentioning the special quality of the spring water that arises here.

The area of the Merpketal (northwest of Ober- and Niederbergheim) was designated as a nature reserve at the beginning of 2015 by order of the Arnsberg district government, as it is culturally and historically valuable and offers habitat for rare plant and animal species. The protection was placed against the objections of the property owners.

At the height of the Lieth near Oberbergheim, between Niederbergheim and Allagen, the Skywalk Möhnetal was built by the Allagen-Niederbergheim village initiative as part of the Leader project 3-Landschaftserlebnis-Wanderwelten.
