St. Antonius and St. Luzia Chapel

history

Church life in Niederbergheim has been documented for over 500 years. Around 1490 Niederbergheim housed a branch / hermitage of the Rüthen Augustinian convent . After the Augustinian nuns left the monastery, reports of the decline of the monastery and the monastery chapel are reported in 1612 and 1691.

Around 1735, the population built a chapel on the foundation walls of the ruined monastery. The place Niederbergheim spread around the chapel. At the beginning of the 20th century, the chapel no longer offered enough space for the faithful. The Niederbergheim Kapellenverein, founded in 1909, built an extension in 1921. To this day, the chapel association is dedicated to maintaining and beautifying the chapel.

Furnishing

The furnishings include four baroque figures from the workshop of the Rüthener wood sculptor Paul Gladbach. It is about the chapel patron St. Anthony, the patron saint of the parish of John the Baptist, and the apostles Peter and Paul. To St. Luzia is reminiscent of a stained glass window in the tower part of the chapel.
