Schüren quarry nature reserve (Meschede)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Schüren quarry nature reserve is located in the higher deciduous forest south of the airfield

The nature reserve Schüren quarry with a size of 1.2 hectares is located east of Schüren in the urban area of Meschede . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 1994 with the Meschede landscape plan. There is also a nature reserve Steinbruch Schüren in the city of Dortmund .

Area description

The NSG is a former limestone quarry whose quarry floor is now covered with forest. To the north or northwest is the Meschede-Schüren airfield . The western part of the former quarry is used as a landfill and rubble dump. Up to 25 m high rock walls made of Sparganophyllum lime are in the quarry. The upper edge, walls and bottom of the quarry are overgrown with trees. There are local small ferns on the rocks. The Schüren quarry is a structurally rich, hardly used and thus largely undisturbed secondary biotope within the intensively agriculturally used fields.

Protection purpose

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
