The Große Steinmecke nature reserve with a size of 8.4 hectares is located in the Arnsberg Forest northeast of Meschede . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 1994 with the Meschede landscape plan.

Area description

The NSG is the Bachtal of the Große Steinmecke . In the NSG there is quarry forest with red alder and poor grassland. Rare animal and plant species are found in the NSG.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the Bachtal with its species inventory.

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
