- June 23 : Pierre de Coubertin founds the International Olympic Committee at the Olympic Congress in Paris with the aim of reviving the Olympic Games . For this purpose, he chooses the week of the French derby , as this guarantees the participation of many sports enthusiasts.
- William Milligan Sloane founds the American Honorary Committee for the Olympic Games in 1896 with the aim of getting an American team to compete in the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 .

- The Sioux City Cornhuskers baseball team is formed in Sioux City, Iowa . In the fall, the team is bought by Charles Comiskey , the previous coach of the Cincinnati Reds , and moves to St. Paul, Minnesota under the name St. Paul Saints .

Motorsport
The first race in motor sport will take place on July 22nd as a reliability drive over 126 km from Paris to Rouen and back. 15 of the 121 registered vehicles reach their destination. The actual winner, Albert de Dion , was denied victory because his steam car is supposedly not “inexpensive” and “easy to use” (which does not apply to any of the participating vehicles). Therefore, de Dion is classified second.
Cycling
- August 12th / 13th : The 1894 track cycling world championships take place in Antwerp, Belgium. There will be two races for amateurs. In flier race wins of the German August teachers , who thus becomes the first German world champion in cycling, winner of the posts is the Norwegian Wilhelm Henie .
- The first Bol d'Or is held at the Buffalo Velodrome in Paris .
- The Vélodrome de Vincennes is built and the first Grand Prix de Paris is held here . The first winner is the US American George A. Banker .
- The Grand Prix de l'UVF is held for the first time.
