Graz city park
The Graz City Park , the largest public park in Graz , was founded in 1869 on the area of the glacis in front of the city wall under Mayor Moritz Ritter von Franck and completed in 1872.
Emergence
As early as 1862, the city of Graz tried to acquire the glacis areas auctioned by the Styrian estates in 1784 for the construction of a public park. It was not until the end of 1868 that the Graz municipality and the military administration could exchange land. The now useless glacis in front of the city walls was taken over by the municipality of Graz, the military received the Feliferhof , which the municipality had acquired in interest-free private loans for 36,000 guilders, as a shooting range. According to the imperial law of November 22, 1868, a public park was to be laid out on the approximately 12.6 hectare large glacis grounds, on which, with the exception of a cursalon, no buildings were allowed to be erected without the consent of the Arar . On December 28, 1868, Moritz von Franck presented the Graz municipal council with a plan for the construction of a city park including a (the city had previously lacked a large-scale) spa salon and a water pipe. For the organization, financing (formation of stock corporations ) and implementation of the project, he proposed the establishment of an association, the later active until 1922 "Association for City Beautification in Graz". At the beginning of May 1869 , the association launched a competition that began on September 1 of that year and provided three prizes. In 1870 the mayor broke the first sod and planted a tree. As work progressed visibly on the city park, it was hoped that the sanitary conditions would improve , since in mid-1870 the local mortality rate was higher than that in the imperial capital Vienna. In 1871 the government abandoned the principle of property that would remain undeveloped when the Minister for Culture and Education , Karl von Stremayr , proposed building the university on parts of the city park facing the city.
At the end of 1872, the first design of the city park was completed, mainly according to the plans of the painter Ernst Matthèy-Guenet († 1898). In honor of Moritz von Franck, founder and long-time chairman of the Beautification Association, an oak tree was planted in the city park ( ).
layout
The aim of the town beautification association founded in 1869 was to create a nature park in the style of an English garden , with a focus on rare, exotic trees. Double avenues were created on the former embankments. The original gas lanterns were converted to electrical operation in the 1970s, whereby the old cast-iron steles could be preserved. There are 600 cast-iron benches and 1,989 trees in the park. In the 20th century, the park was also expanded into an open-air gallery on Styrian cultural history. Busts of Robert Hamerling , Robert Stolz , Peter Rosegger , Johannes Kepler and others were put up. In addition to the Paulustor , an event area was created for the 1981 Catholic Day and several cycle paths were laid out. Near the center of the park is the Forum Stadtpark , which has developed from the former Stadtparkcafe. A music pavilion was built right next to it in 1877.
The center of the park is the city park fountain, one inside the rotunda placed Gewesenes, with an honorary diploma underappreciated art castings exhibit the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873 , which later by Emperor Franz Joseph I. is named. The fountain sculpture was created by Jean-Baptiste-Jules Klagmann (1810–1867) and implemented by the silver and bronze manufacturer Antoine Durenne (1822–1895). After in May 1874 the City Council of Vienna refrained from buying the fountain parts (central part of the fountain including basin decorations) that had been advertised by several cities during the world exhibition from the Durenne company on conditions that were far below their production costs, the city of Graz accepted the offer at 30,000 guilders (ten annual installments of 3,000 guilders) and signed the contract on August 4, 1874. On August 19, 1874, the fountain, transported by five railway wagons, arrived in Graz and was brought to the area already prepared in the city park. Wilhelm Kienzl (1827–1902), Mayor of Graz, put the fountain system into operation on October 4, 1874, the name day of Franz Joseph I, in the presence of Governor Moritz von Kaiserfeld (1811–1885) . The fountain (with eight bronze figures in the basin) was, at least in the opening month, only water-fed daily from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. After the Second World War , in 1952, the city park fountain, which had been renovated (and fenced with a protective grating) thanks to donations from the population of Graz, was reopened.
Planned expansion
In 2016 it was planned to expand the city park with an adjacent parking lot of 4000 m², which was part of the park area earlier. This is used by the Styrian Police Directorate and is owned by the Federal Real Estate Company . However, this request was rejected by the police, although the city of Graz promised alternative parking options. On the other hand, the City of Graz opposed the fact that the police had planned to completely relocate their offices (including the Graz Police Detention Center to the City Park) from this location and relocate it to the main building of the LPD Styria in Straßganger Straße.
Protection status
The Graz city park is a listed building and has been a protected part of the landscape since 1987 . However, the state of Styria and the Graz city administration want to release parts of the park from nature conservation status, the reason for this is a piece of artificial turf in the state sports center on the edge of the park.

Remarks
- ↑ At the same time, the newly appointed commanding general of Graz, Franz von John (1815–1876), requested the mayor to leave the Glacis grounds to the garrison as a parade ground until the park project was implemented. Moritz von Franck did not meet this request, however, which is said to have cost him the post of governor of Styria in 1870 (which went to Guido Kübeck von Kübau , 1829–1907) . - See: Domestic. (...) ↑ The question of the final building site for the new university, which dragged on for almost a year, led to controversies between those who clung to the structurally pristine city park and those who regarded it as secondary or superfluous and feared the tensions that had arisen between the city and the state end with the loss of the university project ( favoring Salzburg ). Ultimately, in 1871/72, the state bought land not far from the Glacisstraße bordering the city park in the Geidorf district and, at the end of 1872, with the first section of the multi-part construction project, the planned (by Karl Stattler , 1834–1895, and Josef Horky , 1828–1909) Physics Institute (Universitätsplatz 6) completed in 1875. - See:
