The Metahof-Schlössl is a small castle on the edge of the Metahofpark in the fourth district of Lend in Graz .

history

The builders of the Metahof-Schlössl are unknown, but in the 16th century it stood on a Dominikal plot of the Eggenberg family . In any case, from 1678 it was owned by the Counts of Saurau. Maria Ludwig Graf von Saurau, owner of the Grazer Palmburg , had a renovation carried out from 1744, which was headed by the builder Joseph Hueber . The north wing was lengthened and the west and south wing were added. An orangery, a glass house, a frescoed garden pavilion and a dairy farm were also added. The Metahof-Schlössl is one of the best preserved noble residences in the city of Graz.

After changing ownership, the castle came into the possession of Count Kottulinsky in 1805, who bought up all of the neighboring properties and had the largest private garden in Graz laid out at the time. Through a parceling in the late 19th century, new streets were created. The Reininghaus family was registered as the owner from 1889 to 1945. The Metahof-Schlössl served as a meeting point for people from Graz's cultural life such as Peter Rosegger , Wilhelm Kienzel and Karl Morré .

After heavy bombing around Graz Central Station, the park and the garden portal were destroyed. The castle subsequently fell into disrepair until the garden pavilion and the connecting wing to the main building were demolished in 1963. There were brief plans to demolish the Metahof-Schlössl in favor of building a residential complex. The city of Graz only took over the baroque palace in 1979. It was adapted as an office building and rented out to companies.
