List of German fencing champions
The list of German individual fencing champions lists all winners of the German championships in individual fencing and - as far as known - the second and third placed. First held as a private event in Berlin in 1896, the German Championships from 1897 to 1899 were organized by the German and Austrian Fencing Federation and, from 1913, by its successor, the German Fencing Federation . Since 1923 there has been a competition for women’s florets in addition to the men’s competitions in epee, foil and saber. In 1926 and 1927 the championships were also held in women's swords, and then again in 1987 . Lady saber competitions have existed since 1999 . Third place has not been contested since 1994, so both semi-finalists win a bronze medal.
As a rule, the German championships are held annually. Because of the First World War, they were interrupted for several years after 1914 and did not take place again until 1920. Before the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 , the German championships were also canceled. During the Second World War, despite the war, the German championships were fought until 1943. After the war, the Allied Control Council banned sport fencing as a "paramilitary exercise". The ban was not lifted until 1950, so that the first German championships after the war could be fought this year. Since then, the competitions have taken place without interruption.

statistics
The athletes with at least four championship titles are listed below. Most of the titles - a total of 23 - were won by Erwin Casmir . The most successful lady was Anja Fichtel , who won ten individual titles in women's floret, making her the second most successful female fencer after Casmir and won the most titles in a single discipline.
Besides Casmir, Günter Stratmann was the only fencer who could win the German championship in all three disciplines. Jürgen Hehn , from Tauberbischofsheimer , was the last fencer to date to become the German individual champion with the sword in 1972 and the foil in 1974 with the increasing specialization in one weapon . Before that, Julius Lichtenfels , Emil Schön , Heinrich Moos , August Heim , Julius Eisenecker , Richard Liebscher , Jürgen Theuerkauff and Walter Köstner were German champions with two different weapons. In the ladies 'saber discipline, German championships have only been held since 1999 and, with two exceptions, in the ladies' sword since 1987. Since specialization in one weapon was already common at this time, no fencer was able to win titles in various disciplines.
