Dieter Schmitt (fencer)

Dieter Schmitt (born May 3, 1940 in Offenbach am Main ) is a former German foil fencer , German champion, Olympic participant and team vice world champion at the 1959 World Championships in Budapest . At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , he won a bronze medal as a substitute fencer for the German foil team. His fencing club was the Offenbach fencing club .

successes

In 1959 Schmitt became German junior champion in men's florets. He won the bronze medal at the German championships for active athletes in 1957 and 1959 , and in 1960 he was runner-up before finally winning the foil championship in 1961 .

As a member of the German national team, he won the silver medal at the World Championships in Budapest in 1959. Together with Jürgen Brecht , Tim Gerresheim , Jürgen Theuerkauff and Manfred Urschel , he only had to admit defeat to the Soviet Union team. At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , Schmitt was substitute fencer for the men's floret team, which won the bronze medal. However, it was not used. In 1964, he took part in the individual competition of the Tokyo Olympics and finished 17th after being eliminated in the semi-finals.

After winning the bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Rome, Schmitt was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf in 1960 .
