Life

The fencer from OFC Bonn was the most successful German fencer of the post-war period until 1968. In 1957 , 1959 , 1961 , 1963 and 1965 he was German champion with the saber; In 1958 , 1963 , 1965 and 1966 he was German champion with the foil. With the team of OFC Bonn he was German team champion in foil fencing thirteen times in a row from 1956 to 1968 and five times in saber fencing from 1964 to 1968 .

Before the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, he married his Bonn club mate Gudrun Vorbrich , who finished fourth with the women's team at the Rome Games. He himself reached the last 24 in saber fencing and in the saber fencing team competition he failed with the German team in the quarter-finals against Poland. With the foil team together with Jürgen Brecht , Tim Gerresheim and Eberhard Mehl he lost in the semifinals against the later Olympic champions from the Soviet Union, but won against the Hungarians in the battle for bronze. For this he was awarded the silver bay leaf on December 9, 1960.

Four years later, at the 1964 Olympic Games , Jürgen Theuerkauff again reached the round of the last 24 with the saber and was sixth with the team. With the foil team he finished 5th. In his third participation in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, he was sixth again with the foil team. Friedrich Wessel , also from OFC Bonn, who was to celebrate even greater success with his world championship titles in 1969 and 1970, also fought in this team .

After the Olympic Games in 1968 Jürgen Theuerkauff withdrew from competitive sports together with his wife, with whom he now had three children.
